When to start washing baby clothes?

I am feeling like it is time to start washing baby clothes and all of my son's old toys (bouncer cover, excercise mat, carseat cover etc), but I don't want to do it too soon. When do yall plan to start doing the laundry?

Re: When to start washing baby clothes?

  • I washed all the newborn and 0-3 months clothes last week. I don't see any harm in doing it now as long as you put everything away so they won't get dirty again.

  • I've already done most of it, I have a feeling this little girl is coming early and I wanted to be prepared.

  • I don't wash new stuff before I put it on.  If this baby has bad reactions and sensitive skin, I'll adjust my habits then.  I've already washed hand-me-downs and wasn't planning to wash covers for seat, etc, but it's not a bad idea.

  • I did all the 0-6 mo sizes last weekend b/c I was feeling energetic. If you can put it away to keep it from getting dusty, why not?

  • I'm going to wait til I'm 34 weeks to wash clothing, setup crib bedding, PnP and install the carseat.  No particular reason, just don't want to jump the gun too much.

Plus... my condo is super dusty no matter how much I dust/vacuum.  So it's best to do it as late as possible or it'll have a nice "snow" of dust all over it.

  • We moved a few weeks ago, so as soon as DH gets the baby's room put together and the furniture moved around I'll start washing and organizing everything.

  • I just started. I am not washing any of the new stuff that I've gotten in case he is too big or never wears it. But I had bags of hand me downs.

How is everyone washing there cloths? Warm water? I read not to use fabric softener and I am using a dye free detergent, but I wasn't sure about the water temp.

  • I would have to have some clothes in order to wash them, but I'm not buying anything until after my shower Crying We'll, I know I'll get tons of clothes and I'll wash them then.

  • We had our shower yesterday, and I'm sitting next to a huge pile of clothes as we speak (I'm on bed rest, so all of the work comes to me). I was thinking of having it done this week. We also bought the sensitive dye free detergent, but I love me so Downy; is there any opposition to using the dye free fabric softner?!?

  • I'm going to wash everything in January. Right now with the holidays everything is so busy, and I have a feeling Jan. is going to just drag on, so I want to leave some things for myself to do.

After 2 1/2 years TTC, 3 IUI's, endo, and a lap, a surprise BFP brought us Alexandra Marie!

  • I washed all the blankets and sheets last weekend and have them folded and put away.

The plan is to wash all Little One's clothes in January. I was all set to buy the special baby detergent when someone asked me . . . Do you plan on washing all your clothes in the baby detergent?

    I said no.

They then said, Why would you get special detergent for the baby then? You will be holding it and it will snuggle all up against you and what you are wearing. So just launder everything in the same detergent. If the LO has a skin reaction, then you need to change the detergent for both you and the baby.

It made sense to me! And that way you know for sure which detergent is causing the issue if there would be.

Re: fabric softener, on the side of my box of Bounce it says not to use on children's sleep wear or anything else labeled flame retardant because it will decrease the flame retardantness (retardation? :)

I used a little vinegar in the wash, it cuts the static cling and you can't smell it once washed.

  • I have a few days off around Christmas so I plan on doing what I can then.

  • We don't have our shower until January 8th.  Until then I probably won't buy all the cloth bins and things that we're planning on keeping the clothes in, so I won't wash until then.  I have tons of hand me downs, so I'll probably just start with washing those in newborn, 0 - 3 months, and 3 months.  Then I'll see about when/if we might use new clothes and bigger clothes, and I'll wash before she wears them.

This. But as I've already addressed-I'm extremely impatient.

  • We are washing all laundry/packing hospital bag on Feb 4 which is still 2 1/2 weeks from my DD. If she decides to come before that, then we'll have to move to plan B - I'll birth a baby and wrap her in swaddling clothes while my mother swoops in to do laundry.. lol. Jesus was born in a manger, right? :P
  • hand-me-downs, I would wash anytime you feel ambitious to do so .. but new clothes, I would wait .. never know if baby's going to fit in them or not .. they might be too small and you can return them for different sizes ..

  • We have received clothes from newborn size to 3T so I've already started the washing.  One load every weekend and I'll eventually get all of the clothes and blankets cleaned.  I clean my own clothes when they are brand new before I wear them because I know that there can be some harsh chemical left over from the manufacturing process so I'm definitely washing all of LO's stuff before it can touch her skin.

  • I've already washed all of his stuff. I was bored one Saturday and just decided to do it all.
