Neti Pot Users: Read!

A friend posted this on Facebook - I haven't had a chance to really check the validity of it, but after a quick search on snopes it seems to be accurate. Kind of scary...definitely take care if you're using a neti pot!

From the article:

"If you are irrigating, flushing, or rinsing your sinuses, for example, by using a neti pot, use distilled, sterile or previously boiled water to make up the irrigation solution," Louisiana State Epidemiologist Dr. Raoult Ratard said in a statement.

The amoeba, formally known as Naegleria fowleri, destroys brain tissue and kills victims in about one to 12 days, according to a statement by the Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals. Symptoms include fever, nausea, confusion and loss of balance and are comparable to those of bacterial meningitis.

  • See that just makes me crazy paranoid. If tap water's not okay to rinse out the sinus cavities then really we're drinking it? or the inside of my nose comes into contact with it in the shower. Too much worry thinking lately. I woke up and needed to neti, but I avoided all together because of the previous post and I was too lazy to head downstairs for the water.
