If you went dairy free...

If you went dairy free, what symptoms led you to do so and how long until you saw results with LO? Also, have you gone completely dairy free or just reduced the amount of dairy?

My LO spits up a TON (often projectile) and acts like he is in pain after nursing. However, he doesn't do it every time and I think I'm starting to notice a pattern that he acts this way after I've had a large amount of milk/milk products. My husband and his brothers, along with my nephew all were formula fed babies that had to have Nutrimigen for cow's milk protein sensitivity so that is leading me to believe that we could be experiencing a similar issue. I've also read a ton on Kelly mom and the links on Kelly mom and I think dairy could be the issue.

Thanks!

Re: If you went dairy free...

  • DS most obvious reactions were being inconsolable after I'd have a bowl of ice cream or rich cake. I avoided obvious offenders by 4 weeks old and by 6 weeks eliminated every trace. He was able to tolerate dairy fine by 7 months so we were lucky. Dairy is a pain to avoid but totally doable. Good luck!

  • We had 2 complete 8-hour meltdowns that ended with bloody poo, so I went dairy free starting at about 2 weeks. He got much better within a week and I slowly added back things like bread made with whey, etc and now I can eat stuff with "hidden" milk ingredients and a slice or two of cheese on my sandwich at lunch. I cannot eat milk with cereal, ice cream, pizza, or anything super cheesy.

  • my son was spitting up a ton. He also had/has reflux. He started on reflux meds and that seemed to help with the pain but he was still spitting up a ton. I gave up obvious dairy (milk, cheese, ice cream) and noticed a difference within a week in the amount he was spitting up. I avoid large amounts of dairy but still have butter or small amounts of cheese. If I have pizza then he spits up a bunch for a day or so. He doesn't seem to be in pain with the spitting up though.
