Hardest to give up?

I saw a post recently where someone was asking how hard it is to give up alcohol when you are pregnant.

Just wondering - what has been the hardest for you to give up?

For me - PEPSI. I'm an addicted so not having it has been hard. I try to balance it with equal amounts of water and often drink caffeine free. Giving it up completely would be bad for everyone involved!

Re: Hardest to give up?

  • For me, it's definitely wine. I drank a fair amount of coffee before I got pregnant, but that's been easy to drastically cut back. But wine...I love wine, I drank it like water. I miss it terribly.

  • I find the smell if alcohol makes me nauseous so def not that. I guess coffee is the hardest for me and I haven't given it up entirely, still allowing myself 1 cup of half caf in the morning.

  • At this point I don't really miss anything.  I had been pregnant, then breastfeeding until the month before my BFP so I haven't really had a chance to get hooked on anything again.  After 2 years without coffee, soda, alcohol... what is another year+.

  • I kind of miss coffee.  Last time I tried to drink it, it didn't sit well so now I'm scared to try it again.

  • Mtn. Dew. I had to give it up when I started the IVF cycle. I drool when I see it. Also, I'm trying to figure out what to eat for lunch because we always eat lunch meat. That's just a pain.

  • Dr. Pepper and sushi have been the hardest to give up.  Although, I bought myself cherry diet 7-up and I don't even really want that.

  • I havent had to give it up yet.....but salt. I know its in my future. With only being about 7 weeks and having swelling problems, I know they are going to cut me off and I dont know how I can deal with that. Salt makes everything have taste.

I was surprised how easy it was to stop drinking though...I was a pretty heavy vodka drinker and always questioned myself on how I would be able to stop. But when we decided to start trying...it was very easy :-) Anything for my baby!

  • Sushi!  That's my favorite date night meal.  :(

  • I'm a big lunch meat eater, too, but as far as I have heard, as long as you microwave it for twenty or thirty seconds it should be fine.

  • I've given up wheat....totally on a gluten/wheat free diet now. It's really hard! However, totally worth it for the peace of mind. Gluten intolerance runs in my family and DH and I were having kind of a tough time getting pregnant (11 months of TTC) so my mom found an article about it and some of the side effects of gluten intolerance were infertility, miscarriage, irritability, nausea, etc. really long list! I didn't have a blood test done to see if I'm allergic to it, but the day after we conceived our LO I cut it out just to be sure it wouldn't affect him/her. At first I avoided all foods that had wheat/gluten in them...then about 2 weeks ago I started looking for wheat free substitutes for some things that were just really hard to give up. So far so good. :)
  • I'm missing wine like crazy!

I still drink a decaf coffee every morning, I've managed to trick my body out of missing it so far.

And all the sushi I eat is cooked, so I'm good!  But no wine over the holidays makes me a sad girl!

    This!!  Except, I'm still breastfeeding.....

Honestly, it's been so long since I've had any alcohol, soda, coffee, etc, I don't miss any of it at all.

  • Hmmm let's see, I still drink a cup of coffee a day, a soda when I want one, I eat sandwiches too.  I didn't drink much so Alcohol isn't missed too much, I don't eat soft cheeses, or sushi.

The hardest for me to give up is being thin. GASP I know. I lost 25lbs this year and was finally below my Prepregnancy weight (with my son).  I'm having hard time grasping being big again.  But at least I know how to lose it right after the baby!

  • Beer. I went out with friends for a 30th birthday pub crawl. Not my best decision. I made it to midnight and had to leave. Being the sober one around a roomful of super-drunk people... cue the angry pregnancy hormones.

  • You think it would be wine for me as I normally drink it almost nightly (mostly while I cook) but it doesn't appeal to me when I'm pregnant, so, I don't really miss it.

So, I would have to say the hardest thing to give up will be my non maternity clothes. I love my wardrobe and will miss it for the months I'm too large to fit into it :)

  • I can join the majority here and say I miss wine! I love wine and not being able to have it sucks, but it is worth it. Like someone else said previously, I only eat the cooked sushi so I'm good with that. I cut back my coffee to one cup a day but the past few days I could care less if I have it thanks to wonderful MS!
