do you eat turkey sandwiches?

this sounds like such a newbie question...but with my last pregnancy i hated all deli meat so it never came up. this pregnancy i actually think turkey sounds good. i know people are all over the board with following any food recommendation to the detail, and others eat what they're comfortable with.

wondering--do you eat turkey sandwiches? (not heated--that grosses me out)

i think i'm extra paranoid since yesterday i snuck a bite of cookie dough (homemade) with raw eggs in it and i'm wondering if i'm being totally irresponsible and lax with pregnancy #2!

ETA: it's fresh sliced turkey from the whole foods deli counter...not prepackaged -if that make any difference whatsoever

Re: do you eat turkey sandwiches?

  • I don't but I have cooked a small turkey and sliced it for sandwiches.

FWIW: I ate some raw dough yesterday too.

  • I am must more lax this time around too.  I stay away from Deli meat unless I know where it came from. So far I have not had any.   For example I won?t eat it if I am at a work function and it has been sitting out.  If I know it has been at the proper temp I would eat it if I really wanted it. As for turkey last time I would make a turkey breast for dinner and have sandwiches for a few days.  It tastes way better than deli meat.

  • I haven't eated sandwich meat yet, but I have had leftover roast beef and turkey sandwiches (not warmed up).  And I've had garlic sausage a few times.  I say go for it, just not every day.

  • Everything in moderation and you should be fine.  Yes I've had turkey sandwiches.  I have low blood sugar and need the protein, when my m/s is bad and I cant stomach other protein forms, I'll have a deli meat sandwich from time to time.  To me I feel like I'm getting some nourishment I wouldn't otherwise have from not being able to keep down food, so when my appetite calls for it I do it lol.  Just try to be safe about it as others have posted.
  • I've had non-heated turkey/deli meat a couple times. Usually it was at a luncheon or somewhere where deli meat was the only option so it was eat or starve.

I had been toasting or heating the deli meat I'd eat at the beginning of the pregnancy but one time I made a wrap panini with turkey and cheese and on the last bite of the first half my stomach turned and I almost vomited. So since then I've been shying away from it.

  • I eat it.  I don't make my own sandwiches because for some reason that grosses me out.  But, I do get turkey and other lunch meat sandwiches from places like Subway or Jimmy Johns.

  • i have a few times early when it was all i could handle eating. now i avoid.
  • I've had two in the last week and they were delicious and amazing and worth every bite. I've heard that cooked/roasted lunch meats are fine (as long as they are not past due). It's the smoked or cured meats that you need to stay away from.

Either way, I am comfortable eating turkey deli meat and will continue to do so whenever the mood strikes.

  • I did with #1 around 25 weeks and on.  I was so sick and meat was repulsive for a long time.  This time I'm just as sick, but lunch meat is ok.  At least I get some protein.  I eat turkey and salami.  I trust the place I get meat and more often than not, I go 1st thing in the morning and they even will open and cut it fresh for me.  The risk is minimal to me.  It might not be with others, but I'm ok with it.

ETA:  I will not eat deli meat at a work function or something similar.  I have no idea where it came from or how it was handled.  I also won't eat it from subway because the subway by me is gross and I wouldn't eat there not pregnant!

  • Yes, I have. I don't see the big deal.  All in moderation!  I don't eat it every day, but maybe 1-2 times a month.  I also drank a glass of diet pepsi yesterday!

  • I eat subs from a local place that I know keeps their meat in a refrigerator until needed. It is sliced fresh and then put away again. I'd have a hard time eating at Subway though because their meat sits in those little containers next to the veggies.

  • You only have to heat it for 20 seconds. Think you can heat it and let it cool?  That's what I do.

  • I only eat deli meat if & when it's heated up.. I'm just not willing to take the risk.

  • I want one SO BAD especially when I feel queasy but deli meat is one of only three things (raw fish, unpasteurized cheese, deli meats) that my very liberal dr. has told me to avoid :(

But it will be one of the first things I have after LO is born!!

  • After 30 people died from eating tainted canteloupe this summer, I've given up on listeria avoidance.  All this time, we've been avoiding cold cuts.....when we should have been avoiding canteloupe....or bean sprouts....or jalapenos.....or lettuce.

I'm not going to quit eating, so why randomly (seems to me) choose some foods and not others.

  • Just another idea, I have been eating hot ham and swiss sandwiches. I cant quite stomach the idea of hot turkey either. I am a paraniod FTM and I even dabbled a little cookie dough over Thanksgiving. I just think it is impossible to resist! Big Smile
  • FWIW my OB told me to stay away from pepperoni, salami, bologna and any other meat that's ground up and pressed together. She gave me her blessing for regular deli meat like turkey. It's been a god-send b/c there is so little protein that actually sounds appetizing right now.

  • i have about 3 turkey sandwiches a week.  i only eat fresh sliced turkey, not the prepackaged stuff. RN at my MDs office said everything in moderation and when i asked about turkey, she told me she ate a turkey hoagie 5 days per week with her last pregnancy. i really wonder the statistics on the number of pregnant woman who contracted listeria from lunch meat. i bet that number is very low.

  • Turkey sandwiches were the only thing that I could eat at one point, and I still like to have them every now and then.  I just buy turkey cold cuts from places that I know.  My dr. said that this is fine.  I haven't had any problems so far, but I definitely don't overdo it.

  • I'm a FTM - so I went through the list with my doctor and she said, Absolutely NO deli meat, unless heated to kill the bad stuff. So every now and then I'll sneak a heated ham and cheese sandwich. But luckily, my mom made a huge turkey for our christmas get together the other night - I took half that turkey home LOL I definitely made turkey sandwiches with swiss cheese. I miss that so much.

I did a bad thing though at my mom's party. I ate salami. ::insert very shameful look:: I know that I shouldn't have, but it's my FAVORITE part of my mom's parties. So I ate like 12 salami rolls (cream cheese in rolled up salami). OMG so good.

  • The only deli meat I've eaten is a ham sandwich from Subway, but I got it toasted.

  • I have been eating turkey and chicken sandwiches too- not deli style but actually roasted in my oven, leftover turkey and chicken.

However, I have been craving hot dogs, and I admit that I ate a cold hotdog out of the fridge.  Followed by a spoonful of cold baked beans.

    Whew!  I am glad I confessed! :)

This exactly. I'm not paranoid about foods. As long as I'm not eating anything slimy or growing green with mold I don't give it a second thought.

  • I do.  Not everyday, but I don't see a real issue with it every once in awhile as long as the turkey meat is from a reputable place (i.e. I wouldn't buy a pre-made sandwich from Cumbie's or something like that- even not pregnant, EW!).  Seriously, how many cases of Listeria have you heard of lately?

Yeah, I just want to point out that you are more likely to get listeria (or another food borne illness) from veggies and fruit, especially lettuce, than deli meat.   I was a FTM once too so understand something not being worth the risk, but just know that you should probably cut out fruit and veggies too if you aren't eating lunch meat.

  • Yes.  Fairly often.

  • I have never heard to not eat pepperoni.

To answer the original question, I don't typically eat turkey or deli meat when not pregnant, so that hasn't changed.
