Just curious if any of you out there with LO's own a gun for safety and protection reasons.
I am legitimately frightened of what my STBXH will pull on me once he is out of jail. I am moving to a new place in February but he is literally crazy and I fear he will find any way he can to figure out where I live and try to hurt or kill me. He has promised me countless times while we were together that if I ever left him he would kill me, and he was not joking. He made that VERY clear.
My mother and I are planning on taking some courses. I have never shot a gun but she is seasoned with all types of guns. And she too feels the need to get her own for safety (he has also threatened her life on several occasions).
I have thought about other precautions such as mace and tasers but I have seen both used on my STBXH and when he is in "that" state of mind they had zero effect on him. I feel a gun for protection of my home could be useful in not only my peace of mind but preventing him from hurting me or my children in the future. I get nervous with the thought of having one in the same home as my children but obviously I'd take extreme precautions with keeping it out of reach and hidden. All I care about is the safety of my family.
What are your thoughts on this topic?
Re: Owning a Gun
I have a gun. I have it for protection and honestly it makes me feel SO much better. My X isn't violent but I have taken it out to secure my house just in case on a couple of instances. I have some history working with law enforcement so that makes me a little more comfortable around weapons. I keep it locked in a safe at the top of my closet with DS is home. I generally keep it loaded but the chamber clear. With my weapon that means you can pull the trigger as many times as you . I can open the safe and run the slide in about 15 seconds and most of that is waiting for the safe to accept my code.
It gives me a good sense of security and I'm confident nothing will happen to DS. He will never get it in his hands. If you have any specific questions, feel free to ask. I also got a concealed carry permit so I can take my weapon with me whenever I feel the need.
I recommend going to a range and trying some weapons out. A good shop will be able to help you pick something out that will be good for you. If they can't, page me on the board and we will chat off board about it. I know a good deal about most weapons and SO used to be in the army so between the two of us we have that knowledge base covered. I'd definitely find out about self-protection laws in your state. I'm in CO and we have the "Make my day" law so we can basically shoot someone in our homes without consequences if we feel threatened.
