Blood clot under incision...how long to heal?

I had a blood clot under my incision that my OB discovered a few days after I came home from the hospital. After they removed the clot, the incision was about 2.5cm deep (for about 4cm long right in the middle of the incision). I have been having the incision packed with wet to dry packing 1-2 times per day. I'm now 4 weeks pp and the incision is about 1cm deep. Has this happened to anyone else? How long did it take for your incision to heal completely?

  • This just happened to a friend of mine. Although she had some sort of suction/vac to help speed recovery and clear things out, not sure if that's part of your recovery as well? For her, she started to feel better at 5-6 weeks, and I know it was very rough leading up to that point. She was in a lot of pain and couldn't do a lot, but it got better.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  • I had part of my incision open up due to a hematoma a few days after I was home too.  I also had to have the incision packed 2x a day (my poor DH - I became the fourth baby around the house!).  Mine completely healed up with the incision closing up with about 2-3 weeks.  I'm not sure how deep mine was, but it sounds like yours is healing, maybe just taking longer than mine.  Sorry I don't have any other advice, but this definitely happens.  I know how you feel though, you need to take care of your new baby and it's hard to move around.  Good luck and fast healing!

  • My incision opened up a few days after I got home from the hospital.  After a week and a half of going to get it packed every day, it is now closed!

  • I had a similar experience...when my son was 9 days, mine opened due to a hematoma. It actually look 10 weeks after that to heal. I was just discharged from the visiting nurse last week - just in time to return to work.  Such a scary experience, but all is well now. I am glad to see these messages since it can feel rather lonely having this experience.
  • This happened to me with DD#1. It took a good 9 weeks until the open wound finally healed completely and closed shut.  It is a very emtionally tagging thing to go through. My husband had to learn to pack my wound daily.   I was very depressed.   However, I did get through it and have an amazing 22 month old DD.  Hang in there! Hugs!
