BFing and biting...

My daughter will be 8 months old in a few days, and we have had great success with our BFing from day one.  Saturday she bit me somewhere between 6-8 times.  I'm talking broke the skin, bled a little bit...so needless to say, I am sore.  I've tried reading some suggestions, but she hasn't responded to the whole "Oh, you don't want to nurse right now?" approach, nor did yelping in pain do me any good.  She probably does have a tooth coming in...as of right now, she has her 2 bottom teeth.  Has anyone experienced this, and if so, do you have any tips for me?

I don't want to give up nursing, as I was hoping to make it to at least her 1st bday.  Also, in the intermin, while I heal, I am pumping.  I'm concerned my stash is going to dwindle, so I def need to do some things to keep my supply up- any advice on that front as well?

Thanks so much for any advice you can pass along.  I'm sure it sounds silly, but the cuts she has given me are pretty painful...

Re: BFing and biting...

  • I'm sorry I know it is so hard when your baby bites you when you are trying to do what's best for her. Ds did the same thing about the same age the women on here gave me the best advice. If she bites take her off the boob tell her now set her in the middle of the floor and walk away. She will cry and it will be hard on you but after a few minutes go pick her up tell her you love her and offer her the breast again. Repeat process until biting stops. I also found rubbing orijel on my sons gums before we started nursing helped him not want to bite so much.

As for your cuts I'd say treat them with nipple cream like you would have sore cracking nipples when you first started nursing. It will help them heal.

  • Thank you so much, I'll definitely try it. I yelled initially, and it's clear that was the wrong move. I was able to feed her two ties through the night last night, but that's only bc she was 1/2asleep. I knew she wouldn't bite me then. I think I now have maybe some blocked ducts or something, since there's a hard lump and I don't feel well. I can't wait for the normalcy to return. I'm so grateful to hear that someone else experienced this and was able to stop the behavior. I hope I am able to do so too.

Thank you so much again, I really appreciate your advice.

  • I really hope things go back to normal for you soon. I know how hard it is. If I were you I'd try a warm compress on the lump before feeding to help get rid of the lump for you. Night time feeding were always easier when we were having a hard time too. Just hang in there you are a great mom for wanting to keep bfing even though it's hard for you. Good luck
