Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

Do you let your toddler eat raisins?

My DS hates them, so I never buy them, but my DH brought home a box from the store yesterday and let DD try them.  She LOVED them!  I'm a little hesitant about letting her eat them again though.  They seem like a pretty big choking hazzard for a 20 month old (even though she did fine eating them yesterday).

Am I being ridiculous?

Re: Do you let your toddler eat raisins?

  • DD eats raisin bread pretty much every day.

  • My DD eats them everyday. That size isn't a choking hazard.
  • DS has been eating raisins since he's been 12 months. He loves them. We've never had any issues with them and choking. Just make sure they aren't in huge stuck together clumps.

  • The raisins we give DD are pretty tiny.. not sure how she'd choke on them.

Sometimes, as a special treat, she even gets chocolate (or yogurt) covered ones.

  • I think it's fine.  Just keep an eye on them vs letting them run rampant with a box of raisins.  :)

  • I would, but they are one of the few things DS doesn't like!

The one time I gave them to him, he moved each raisin individually into the cupholder of his high chair tray.

I'm sure they are fine, not a choking hazard, they are pretty small.

  • Ok, thanks everyone. She loved them, so I am going to let her have them again.

I was always very laid back about letting my kids eat anything and everything, but last year the next door neighbors of my DH's aunt lost their 3 year old grandson after he choked to death on a grape and I became very paranoid after that.

  • DS loves raisins! I let him eat them :). He started eating them around 15 or 16 months and does just fine.

  • DD doesn't like raisins on their own but loves cinnamon raisin bagels. Just like her Mom.

    A grape is much larger.

  • I think raisins are on my pedi's list of choking hazards, so I avoid them.  I'll confess that I'm super paranoid about him choking and tend to cut his food much smaller than other parents.  He's 16 months.

  • No, because raisins are the work of the debbil. And gross.

  • Um, it actually never even occcured to me to give LO raisins as a snack.   I personally hate them, so in my brain this means no one else likes them either.

I should really give them a try with LO.  I bet he would love them, simply because I hate them and would now have to buy them.

You're right.  I guess I just developed an irrational fear, It's very scary and alarming when you find out that a child you've seen playing outside at someone's house many times before actually died.  At the time I had stopped cutting my DS's grapes up because he was 3.5 and did fine chewing them, but then I started cutting them up again.  And I question giving my DD things that I wouldn't have thought twice about giving my DS at this age. Raisins can be either chewy or hard,so I was on the fence about whether they were a good snack choice for a toddler.
  • I don't give them to DS yet because despite what everyone thinks, they are a choking hazard.  Just because they are small, does not mean a child can't choke on them.  I have always been taught that raisins are a choking hazard for babies and young tots. And while I think DS would probably be fine with them, he is fine without them for now.  We also don't give him popcorn or peanuts

  • As long as they are soft I let her have them.  Actually she reallly likes craisins much more.

  • Yep. He also loves the yogurt covered ones.

  • Just keep a good eye on her when she eats them. DS loves them but they can be sensitive to their tummy so I give him a small hand full for the day.
  • "Aren't raisins a choking hazard?

In 2010, the American Academy of Pediatrics removed raisins from their list of choking hazards because they couldn't find any reported cases of children choking on raisins"

Okay, I stand corrected. Embarrassed  I guess we will start trying raisins.

  • DS loves Craisons... I purchased raisons over the weekend and he hated them.  I don't give him a handful or bowlful of craisons.. I give them to him one by one... it's one of those things I give to him while I'm cooking or something and he comes and gets more as he wishes.

Glad you found that... because I was thinking "but they really aren't a choking hazzard... at least not on the list I have".

  • Raisins are one of DS's favorite snacks. I even let him snack on them in the car Surprise. We all have irrational fears...raisins are not one of mine.

  • Raisins were taken off the choking hazard list because they realized there were no instances of death related chokings.

  • DD goes nutso for raisins, she loves her 'rainits' SOOO much and will ask for them, and if i ask if she wants oatmeal she'll pipe in with "oatmeal with rainits???"

    BUT

she gets a really bad diaper rash from raisins, so i have to limit how much she gets. easier said than done considering how apeshit she goes for them.

  • I don't give them to DS, but that's bc they're sticky and bad for teeth. I figure they were only a choking hazard until about a year.

  • We do, they're too small to choke.

We don't let him run around with them, mostly because he'd feed them to the dog and they're not good for dogs, at all.

  • Yes, she eats them all the time.  Regular ones and the yogurt covered ones.  She loves both.

  • Occasionally, but I generally avoid them because they stick to their teeth and since kids aren't as good about getting that stuff out of their teeth can lead to cavities.  I don't worry about them as choking hazards though.
  • My DS LOVES raisins and craisins.  I didn't read all the responses, so someone may have said this, but sometimes the raisins don't digest and I find whole ones in his poop.  YUM!

  • My daughter likes them--- BUT they still look like raisins when they come out because she apparently does not digest raisin skin.

  • If they have them at sample day at Costco I let them go to town, but I don't buy them b/c the sugar content is crazy

  • He eats them almost every day and has since about a year old.

  • i was concerned for a while, too, but i've been giving her them any time we went out to eat for several months (about 6 or so??) now. i would only give her literally one raisin at a time. this kept her occupied when out, she looked forward to eating them whenever we went out (still does). now i won't give her the box, but i'll place several down at a time... i think the choking hazard is when they all glom together.

  • Yes to raisins.  And I'm sorry, but I agree with the PP who said you're being a little ridiculous.  Raisins are small and soft - I can't imagine how they'd be a choking hazard, especially for a 20 month old.

  • He hasn't had them yet but not because I'm scared - I just hadn't thought of it yet :-p  But I remember my mom telling me a story of how she took us to the dentist and he was clear with her that candy is actually better for teeth in terms of cavities than raisins because raisins stick in the teeth badly and with little little kids brushing isn't always as good as it can be.

  • He's only had them twice. I did worry about them sticking together/choking too, since DS basically shovels as much food as he can into his mouth at once. That said, he seems to like them well enough but not love them, so I'll probably not give them very often, anyway. Also, our dentist is not crazy about sticky/chewy snacks, and I'm assuming they fall into that category anyway.

Good to know.  I, too, was under the impression that they are a choking hazard for kids under three.  I think my daughter would do fine with them, but I had been avoiding them because of the choking danger.

  • DS loves raisins, he eats some almost every night.  He started around 18months with Cinn Raisin Bread.  Then, his DCP said she gave him some at snack time so we started doing it at home.  He goes nuts for 'em.  When we give him some, we put them in a small container & make him sit either in his high chair or "big boy chair" (toddler chair).
