Woke up vomiting. Scary!

So disgusting and it really scared me (TMI to follow!  Read at your own risk!):

TWICE last night I woke up already in the process of vomiting.  Not just a little reflux, but actually throwing up complete with vomit, crying (I can't throw up without instinctively beginning to cry), feeling shaky all over and that acidic bile taste stuck in my throat and nose when I was done...  I felt like an alcoholic who dies in their sleep, having choked on their vomit.  I'd never heard of this happening before during pregnancy though and while I hope none of you have suffered through this, I'm also not going to lie - knowing at least someone else has would be reassuring.

I wound up taking to the couch, sleeping sitting up with a bucket by my side.   I woke a couple more times feeling nauseated but didn't get sick again overnight, TG.

So happy we're doing the staff picture for our practice's holiday card today - I'll be looking pretty after throwing up in my sleep instead of getting any sleep :-(

  • Oh my, you poor thing :( Did you feel queasy before bed or was this a total surprise? I wonder if you ate something that didn't quite agree with you...

I hope you don't have to deal with this ever again!

  • This happened to me last week and I took some Tums to get back to sleep.  I asked my OB about it and she suggested taking Zantac before bed which I have been doing since.

  • I did have heartburn before bed, so I took Tums and sat upright on the couch for a good 2 hours before going to sleep (I usually lay right down), but no true queasiness before bed.  It definitely wasn't anything I'd classify as reflux, it was actual throwing up.

I'm calling my Ob today and hopefully they'll put my mind at ease.  Thx ladies.

  • I think it's still likely reflux related.  I actually dealt with this last pregnancy and it's started up again this time.

I already take Zantac at lunch and supper (I had GERD prior to pregnancy, so I had a head start on this crap) and I usually end up taking one max stength tum each time I get up to pee at night (typically 2-3 times).  I also start my night off by sleeping inclined with two extra thick pillows to help keep things down.  It also helps to not eat anything with a lot of liquid like cereal or soup within a few hours of bed.  Dry foods stay down better for me, so if I want a snack prior to bed I go with something like toast rather than a bowl of cereal.

From my understanding, the reason this is happening now is that your whole body is getting a relaxin hormone to prepare for delivering the baby.  Unfortunately, that hormone can't be contained to the cervix and vagina. So, likely the door on the top of your stomach which usually is shut tight to keep food down is relaxed and weakened from the hormone, so food can work up when you lay down.  It will go away after delivery pretty quickly.  I actually had no issues after I had my son until about 3 weeks ago with this pregnancy.

It can be very scary and sucks to wake up to!  I'm sorry you have to experience this too!  I've also had it cause cold-like chest congestion the next day from anything I inhaled. I hope you can find something that works for you!
