I'm trying to decide if I need a breast pump before I go into labor or if it's something I could pick up/order after being dismissed from the hospital. Thought?
I got one at my shower. I got the Medela Harmony manual pump because I plan to SAH and don't think I need a more expensive electric version. I didn't open it yet though.
I bought mine because of a sale and coupon as well. I am a planner and would rather have one already than have to go and buy one on top of caring for an infant. I got a Tommee Tippee one.
I bought mine already, only because someone I knew was selling theirs and it was exactly the model I wanted (Medela PISA). They had opened it, but never used it, and obviously couldn't return it since it had been opened. I got it for over $100 less than it's sold in stores. Couldn't pass that up.

I'm waiting to get one until I know my boobs work. I would hate to spend all that money on one and then have it work out where I can't breastfeed anyway.

I think it depends on if you are going to want to bottle feed so soon (or start to store the milk). My mom has a brand new one for me already, but I do not plan to use it till a few weeks after delivery. I want to offer breast only until my baby girl is 6 weeks old.
If you find one that you really love or one on sale right now, I don't see any reason to wait till later to buy it.
I have one from my first DS. But, trust me, I made the mistake of waiting last time around and it was a really bad idea. The day after I got home from the hospital my milk came in, nursing wasn't working out like I had planned, and my boobs felt like they were going to explode. I was still in a lot of pain from delivering and didn't feel like leaving the house. So I had to send DH to Walmart for a breast pump. He was totally clueless so he called me from the store and basically read me the descriptions from the box of every breast pump they had.
I'm not saying it's a bad idea to wait a bit before investing $300 on a pump, but at least have a cheap manual pump on hand just in case.

This. I plan on renting one from the hospital for about the first month, then I'll go out & spend the money on one if it works.

So glad someone brought this up.. I had been umming and aagghing about whether to get one or wait.... I think I'll probably wait and have a manual for emergency backup.
I plan to order mine this week but only because I have a coupon and want to take advantage of the rewards. I don't plan to start pumping until at least 6 weeks before I will return to work. I want to get breastfeeding well established before I even think about offering LO a bottle. And I have heard horror stories about women who started pumping right away after every feeding who became massively engorged because they were in essence telling their body to make enough milk for multiple babies.
We had a manual pump for those first few days and then a few weeks later when things weren't working out as I had hoped and I decided to EP we bought an electric double pump. (Ameda Purely Yours)
My insurance doesn't help cover renting/buying one (some policies do), so I went ahead and bought one in advance since we plan to pump + bottle feed right away: however I'm not opening it until after just in case something doesn't work since the cost is > $100!
I haven't purchased it yet, but I plan to very soon. Our lactation consultant said it was best to have one on hand when your milk came in (even if it was just a cheap manual one) so you could relieve engorgement if necessary.
My employer gives us sales rewards points (instead of commission because we are not truly sales) so I used my points from the last 3 months and my pump was just delivered this weekend. They only had Avent's double electric, but I have heard great things so I'm happy.
I still need to check with our insurance and see if they cover them, but I think we're going to wait to get one. I'm more concerned about my LO being lactose intolerant than I am about if I'll be able to BF. My brother and I were both lactose intolerant as babies (me worse than him and I still am), my niece (6mo old) is also lactose intolerant. I would hate to spend the money on a pump and then end up having to use soy formula instead.
