How to find a nanny / aupair / daycare in a new location (moving-related)

We're moving!  Yeah!  But we'll need to find childcare to start basically within a week of arrival.  I'm planning to ask my future co-workers for recommendations, but I'd like some other suggestions.  Since I work shift (including overnights) and DH travels, we either need a VERY flexible in-home daycare or live-out nanny or have a live-in / au pair.  We'll be in the DC area (likely Gaithersburg / Rockville).

Our current childcare is a licensed in-home and we love her so much that I almost want her to move with us (almost, heck, we DO want her to come with us...but she can't).  We found her on Craiglist, but I don't know I we can find someone as fantastic as her again that way.

Any suggestions?

  • We found our nanny on care.com.

  • I found all our (3) nannies and several occasional babysitters (in different locations) at sittercity.com. I can really recommend the service, the sitters are checked and they are all serious. Have 5-8 lined up for interviews when you get there and then go from there. I have even been able to get long-distance babysitting through them (called them up and interviewed per phone).

  • I've heard great things about DCurbanmom.com.  My friend found her nanny there.  In general, care.com is great.  My friend in Rockville just gave up her nanny.  I don't know if she found a new job yet so I could ask but I don't know if her hours are flexible.  My friend had her for a 9 to 5 job.  For au pair, my friend in MD (and my SIL in NJ where I am) used Cultural Care and both had very positive experiences and I'm sure that is what we will use if we end up going that route at some point..

Good luck and enjoy! I grew up in Rockville and I do miss it at times.  It's a great place to live!

  • Some of my friends in that area have used Monday Morning Moms to find their daycare.  You pay for their information, but it sounds like you have such specific needs with your hours that it could help to have them do the legwork for you.

You should try posting on the DC Bump board to see if anyone there has other suggestions.

  • I've had great luck with care.com but generally take more than a week to sort through the candidates and interview.  When I needed care on more of a short term notice, I used a nanny agency that did all the information verification and pre-interviews.  Our last main nanny b/f we moved was from a nanny agency, and it was nice being able to specify to the agency to find someone who would/could work occasional overnights (when DH and I were both on-call).

Agencies are certainly more costly, but very helpful when your needs are specific and your timeframe to find someone is short.
