PT work and pumping questiong

I just went back for my first day of work today (yay!). It was a short day- only 4 hours- so I decided not to pump, but then I was engorged and leaky afterwards. I'd hoped those days were behind me... anyway, I'll be working some short shifts, so I'm trying to get a feel for when I should pump.

For those of you not working 9-5, how often do you pump? Do you pump during shorter shifts (I'm thinking I might have to)? Since I'm only working a few days a week, I don't need to worry about having enough to leave for her because I can pump on my days off. Also, she prefers straight from the tap and doesn't take much milk when I'm away.

Just wondering what others are doing!

Re: PT work and pumping questiong

  • When I work short shifts I put on my break, which is only 10min, but it's enough for me not to be leaking. If I'm working a 6hr shift and get a lunch most of the time I will only pump on my lunch.

  • I work 6:30-12:30 4x/week.  I pump in the morning (I leave before DD is up), once at 9:30, and then I feed DD when I get home around 12:50.

  • Since LO likes it straight from the tap i would pump about 2 or 3 hours before the end of your shift. I work ft and pump @ 2 hour then every 3 hours.

  • Thanks for the input!
  • I work 6 hr days and when DS was 6 months I tried to pump 2x/day, if I couldn't 1x was fine because I had milk from a morning pumping session.

  • I'd just pump once for every bottle your LO takes while you're away.  You don't really want to have to pump when you're at home with her b/c you are telling your body, "Thanks for making this milk for my baby, now make a little more!" whereas on your working days, you're telling your body not to make as much.  See how it could be confusing?  You want to keep your supply as regulated as possible.
