This is purely theoretical at the moment, since I don't plan on getting pregnant again for another year or so, but I'm kind of curious. If you've already been nursing Baby #1 for a year or so when #2 is born, does it switch back to colostrum for the newborn? I know that the milk changes as babies get older, so does it all basically just restart when a new kid comes along? How does the older one deal with that?
Re: Tandem nursing question.
My understanding is that during second tri, the supply dwindles (often to nothing), then colostrum starts forming later in pregnancy. Then, when new baby arrives, it changes to new baby milk and goes from there.
I just hit my second tri and am pretty sure my supply is pretty much done. DD still says there is milk, but I don't think there is nearly as much as I used to have...It also tastes different...not nearly as sweet.
I think each older kid deals differently. My DD seems perfectly happy to nurse for comfort, even though there is so little milk. It isn't as comfortable for me...We will see if she continues to nurse until the new baby is born...
Yes, I would like to know too!! My baby is currently 8 months old. It would break my heart if I had to ween her and buy formula. I'm still kinda in denial about it all. So any positive stories that it is possible would be great!! If I dry up in the 2nd trimester, I will feel like a complete failure. She will only be 10-11 months old!
