How many gifts for LO

We have only one child and DH and I have been "discussing" how many gifts we should put under the tree for DD...

I don't think we should put too many since she is still so little and won't get it and because she will get a lot of stuff form her aunts/uncles/grandparents and others... But DH said he used to get 10-15 gifts so we should do the same... WDYT?

  • 5

Four will be wrapped under the tree from SO and I: Something she wants, something she needs, something to wear, and something to read

Santa will leave her one gift unwrapped beneath the tree

  • We got him a play kitchen so that will be already assembled and we will just show it to him

To open he will have 2 gifts- some play food and a book

From santa he will have 4 gifts in his stocking-2 play animals, another book and a new sippy cup (with his name on it)

  • DD is getting a shopping cart, some play food, and two outfits from us.  She doesn't know the difference at this point and her grandparents will spoil her I'm sure.
  • We got him 1 gift. He will get plenty from family.

  • About 20-including 7 stocking stuffers (we do a stocking stuffer a night for 7 nights).
  • I have some little toys for stocking stuff (dunno how many), and he has three (I believe) presents under the tree from us.  His big present will be unwrapped and from Santa.

  • DS has a couple books, a puzzle, an Elmo, a couple outfits, and some boots. So 7? Nothing major. He has plenty of things and he'll get some more toys from family.

  • 3- one of which is a step stool so he can step up to brush his teeth. DH and I haven't made a final decision yet, but we're trying to decide what seems reasonable for the future.  If you start with 10  or 15 gifts now when they are smaller and less money, how will you handle it when LO is 12 or 16 and wants gifts that 50+ bucks each?

We also have lots of family around that buys gifts.  Already, LO has received 11 gifts.  Today at my in law family Christmas he had 6 gifts and got tired of opening presents and refused to open the last 2, which was tough for my MIL.

  • My DD isn't getting much.  I think the only thing under the tree will be a FP Little People play house and some extra people for it.  We have other things, like a shopping cart, from when DS was younger.  She has  a few stocking stuffers (a LeapFrog cell phone, a little baby doll, and something esle I can't remember).  She will be getting a few things from grandparents (at their houses) and from aunts and uncles.

DS is getting a bike (with helmet, horn, and water bottle), a FP Imaginext Batcave for under the tree.  We got him more stocking stuffers than will probably fit in his stocking, mostly from the dollar bins at target and some action figures and candy.

My ILs go kind of crazy, so I have to make a separate list for them and a third list for my parents.  We focus more on a price limit than a # of gifts.

  • I feel like we probably bought him around 10 gifts which is way more than the 2 we bought him last year. They are all pretty cheap/small things though-- I would guess I spent maybe $75 max on his presents this year. Some of the things are items that he uses in his different therapies and really enjoys/does well with so we figured it would be nice to have our own set to work on the different skills we are working on. Also, all gifts are from us-- we dont really put much emphasis on Santa (don't worry we're not complete buzz kills-- we did breakfast with santa, have a few christmas books that have santa, etc. we just talk about him more as a fun christmas character like rudolph vs someone that you need to be good for to get presents if that makes any sense)

As pp said being concerned about how you will keep up with buying say 10 gifts for an older child that likes more expensive things-- we will just set a dollar amount. I know my parents always did that and I understood as I got older that if I was asking for bigger things that I was going to have less to open than say my little sister who was still getting smaller cheaper toys while I was getting clothes gift cards and electronics.

  • Whoa. 10-15 is insane to me. Here's what DS is getting:

A Cozy Coupe (this is his "big" Santa gift)

A wooden train track set (generic, not Thomas)

A handmade cloth book about Rudolph

His stocking, which right now contains a T-shirt, board book, stickers, a mini soft football and goldfish crackers.

I heard somebody say recently that 3 gifts was good enough for Jesus, and I think that's kind of a good point, especially since DS is so young, doesn't know the different and will still get a ton of stuff from relatives too.

  • 3 items in stocking - all from $1 bin at Target

2 "big toys" from Santa - a toolbench and a school bus - neither will be wrapped

17 wrapped gifts under the tree

1 remote control train set - DH will put together and have it running on the tracks for DS to see in motion on Christmas morning :)

DS is our only child and as all grandparents live abroad (and have low incomes), DS doesn't get any presents from them - so we do go all out for him.
