Coccyx (Tailbone) Pain

Anyone else suffering through this so early?  I'm 5 months and having a really hard time with it when I get up, sit down, change position during sleep, etc.

Suggestions for relief?  I've spoken to my doctor (who has pretty much said, "Sucks to be me") and my chiropractor (who just suggested more adjustments).  Considering finding a RMT in my area that specializes in prenatal care, but wonder if it will do any good.

Re: Coccyx (Tailbone) Pain

  • you could try a SI belt (sacroiliac) to see if the pressure from that helps.  Look for it at home medical supply place where they might let you try it on to see if it helps.  Otherwise I'm sure you could buy them online and they do sell ones specifically for maternity.

  • My tailbone has been really sore too.  It hurts to sit on anything and my crotch hurts if I sit too long.

  • Mine hurts when I walk, so I'm not sure if it's tailbone or sciatica pain. Either way, it sucks, and I'm sorry that you're in pain. I have no clue how to make it go away.

  • I know what your doing through I'm having the same problem and when I said something to someone in family that just laughed and said you sit on your tailbone when I said I think I sat to long on tailbone so I just ignored it cause I thought I was just being weird.
  • My tailbone pain was really bad early on. I think at around 13-14 weeks, I could hardly move at night because it was so bad. Its gotten much better with time. I think some of the surrounding ligaments just had to stretch out a bit.

  • Mine hurts, but it's the result of my difficult labor and delivery of DS.  I've sort of learned how to live with it since.  I know how much it sucks!

  • I had tailbone pain at the end of the first tri. It felt like someone had kicked me. I sat on a soft pillow for a few days and it helped a lot. It gets sore every now nd then depending what I'm sitting on. Hope you feel better soon!

  • I have this when I get up from sitting for a long time. I find it helps to sit on a heating pad for awhile, propped against a soft cushion.

  • I made the mistake of having a bath when the pain first started.  Everything was great, until I tried to get out...  :S

I've got a magic bag, maybe I'll just heat that puppy up and sit on it for a bit. Otherwise I think I'll be trading my computer chair in for an exercise ball at work...

  • I have this. I can barely walk/move/sit, etc. without crying out in pain at the end of the day. I didn't have this with my first pregnancy. The more I do during the day, the more it hurts that night.

  • I use a sacroiliac belt for support when exercising and doing housework. I also sit on a coccyx cushion in the car for my commute...mine's the "Tush Cush" cushion on Amazon. Make sure you're stretching your glutes and piriformis muscles, and you can alternate ice and heat on that region.

  • I am with you!! I didn't have this with dd's pregnancy. Since I'm on modified bedrest I don't sit up a whole lot, but when I do I feel it. If I sit on the floor, I feel like i'm dying when I get up my tailbone is so sore. What is the deal with this? :(

  • I know I'm super late on this, but thought I'd add that a friend of mine who is a physical therapist told me that this was from ligaments stretching.  I've had it since week 12 or so, and found that doing yoga helps A LOT.
