When is spit up a concern?

My 3 week old has been spitting up after almost every feeding. Sometimes it's with a burp, other times not. We keep him upright after I feed him but it doesn't always help. He doesn't seem upset when he spits up so I dont think it's reflux but it still concerns me. Any input?

Re: When is spit up a concern?

  • My DD wasn't much for spit up, but I almost expected there to be a little spit up after each meal, so I wouldn't be concerned unless it seems to annoy LO.  Mention it to your pedi though, they would know.

  • Mine's been doing it a lot the last week or so also. My understanding is the spitup is usually just the milk that was sitting on top of their gas bubble and isn't more than a mouthful or two. I always check if he's still hungry after burping and if not, don't worry about it.

  • Our LO has/had reflux.  You'd know something was wrong! :)  He would make these terrible urping noises and choke on the acid, it kept him up at night, it was projectile spit up, he was losing weight, and it smelled very acidic.

  • My guy used to do the same thing. He would spit up when I burped him between breasts, then after the second breast, then after I picked him up from his diaper change... it was ridiculous, I went through 3-4 burp cloths a day, not to mention my own cloth changes.

I was told my LO was a 'happy spitter' because he didn't fuss when he spat up, ate happily and was gaining weight.
