DS started trying solids at 6 mo, for about two weeks, then he got sick and for a whole week I didn't want to do solids since it was a stomach bug. He wasn't very thrilled at first and now he just won't eat; he clamps his mouth shut, pushes my hand away and if I get the spoon in his mouth he gets so mad and spits it right out!. The advice I got was "keep offering" but how long does it take for them to get the gist of it?
I wanted to try a combo of BLW and purees--in all honesty only because I haven't gotten around to read the book and I figured I can't screw up purees. The few times we have attempted BLW it makes me so nervous because as with the Mum Mums he bites a big chunk of it. Today he refused his cereal so I let him have a Mum Mum he started gaging and a second later, all the cereal and all the chunks of the cracker came right up! He had never spit up with solids, i wonder if his tummy still feels upset?
Should I be a little concerned that he's almost 7 mo and doesn't take more than a half of teaspoon of food a day??? I asked the pedi and she side eyed me when I mentioned BLW and told me to give him a "jar" (ha this made me laugh, she is not our regular doc) three times a day!
Any one in a similar situation? Please?
Re: He Still Won't Eat
Owen hates the spoon, but I'm entirely comfortable with just doing BLW so that's what we do. Gagging and even vomiting isn't outside the realm of normal learning - it's gross, but he probably won't do it again anytime soon. Owen is getting good at spitting things out when he puts too much in. He's finally eating a bit, too. He likes banana, and the other night was really into cornbread taco casserole.
One thing that does work well (for us) for self-feeding things like yogurt or purees is to smear it on a tupperware lid and let him lick/suck it off. That he likes.

That's a great idea! I've been wondering how to get the liquidy things into E without the spoon so she can feed herself. I'm going to try that. Thanks Token!

If he still won't take baby food, there is no reason to be worried. As long as your LO continues to grow fine, he doesn't have to have baby food. Maybe he just isn't ready. Keep trying though, and definitely try what PP said. That would be cute even if it didn't work. My baby is 7 months old and while he will eat baby food, I don't offer it much. But thats just us.
Maybe you could dump some food onto high chair tray and see if LO will eat it up?
I don't have any experience with BLW, but I can speak toward babies not eating solids.
Please try not to worry! My older son (who is just 2 now) never ate baby food. I'm not even kidding...I tried multiple times a day for months. Every food imaginable. He locked his lips, spit it out if somehow I got it in there, literally every bad reaction in the books. I, too, stressed about it. My pediatrician, and several of my freinds' pediatricians who went through the same thing, said that babies truly get all the nutrition they need from breast milk (or formula) for the first 12 months of their lives.
For my kid, at about 10 months or maybe even more, it clicked and he started eating. He never did eat purees though, and still doesn't like yogurt or really anything that has to eaten on a spoon. I think for him it's a textural thing. Maybe your kid will take to the more solid things soon. The first thing we had success with with my older son was cheerios and then toast. Lots and lots of toast and cheerios. Then fruit. Once they can have pieces of fruit, your LO may love that. Holden loved, and still does, bananas, grapes, strawberries (which apparently I was supposed to wait on but I didn't know at the time), blueberries. With all those, at first I cut them into tiny pieces. My little guy seems to be taking after his brother and hates purees thus far too. But toast, cheerios and little pieces of banana have gone pretty good. He doesn't seem ready for the other things yet (IMO) but I'll try in a month or two.
I promise that it only seems like all the other babies eat. What I learned is that so many babies resist baby food but when it's yours it's hard to not worry! GL!
Does he put toys in his mouth to gnaw on? Does he do it less since the stomach bug?
One of my guys has major eating issues. One thing that has helped with solid is to give him something hard to gnaw on while in his highchair. He really likes carrot sticks and celery. He will gnaw on them for 5-10 minutes. After that, I let him play with the spoon. He often gags himself with the spoon, but will got right back to the carrot. I think a lot of times it's a texture issue.
Have you tried pasta with your LO?
Will he let you "brush" his gums?
He is constantly trying to put things in his mouth, it has not changed since the stomach bug, he still likes to gnaw on things. I really think he might do better with a BLW approach because he likes to "feed" himself, he loves Mum Mums, he did fine with a steak-fry shaped sweet potato as well with a banana but if I give those in puree form he won't eat them. I gave him a chicken wing bone to suck on, he was in heaven! But I'm beginning to think it's not just a texture issue but a flavor issue because he refuses to eat apple sauce so I gave him a piece of apple slightly steamed he wouldn't eat it either.
I haven't tried pasta yet, which kind should try? He does fine with me brushing his gums.
I really need to buy the BLW book and read it!
To the other posters, thanks for the ideas and making me feel a little better, I'm not too worried now

Try the corkscrew pasta. It's easy to grip and not too long. I over-cook it a little so it's pretty soft.
Owen loves rotini! I've also given him tortellini and ravioli to try to get him to eat some of the filling (meat or pumpkin).
Today he knocked back a full slice and a half of pear. It was a good texture for him to eat himself.
