Breastfeeding

Feel like I am the cause of my baby's pain :(

So, we have fed Nutramigen all day today while I pumped and DD has only poped twice (vs. over 12, runny, sometimes streaked with blood times when I feed her). :( I have only been off dairy for 4-5 days now and want to get back to BFing her, but I feel like when she has tummy issues, it's my fault. How do I get past this? I hated taking the break from nursing her and definitely want to, but knowing that my milk is the likely cause of this is making me really sad.  Anyone go through this??

Also, my pumping output is crap. I get 3 oz total to replace feedings. Used to be a lot more, but since she was having tummy troubles, she stopped taking as much. Also, I think I am ovulating and AF is going to come soon...happened with DS too and killed my supply from ovulation to AF.  I want to BF DD for at least 6 months and am so afraid I won't be able to now.

  • I haven't been in your particular situation, but I just wanted to say I'm sorry you're going through this. Whatever decision you ultimately make, it will be fine. You can build your supply back up (3 oz a session is not bad at all -- remember the baby is more efficient than a pump), and even if you are getting your period, that doesn't have to mean the end of BF. Most importantly, it is NOT your fault that your LO is having tummy troubles. You're doing what you need to do to get her healthy again, and once the dairy is out of your system, hopefully you can resume nursing. It will be okay!!

  • DD was the same way, and I recently cut out all dairy.  She was better within a day.   3 oz per session isn't bad at all; your LO will be able to get much more than that.  I hope you are able to BF normally again soon.

I went through this with both of my girls - knowing that feeding them was hurting them was terrible, but remember, this too shall pass.   A year from now, all that will matter is that you cared and did everything you could to make it better.  ((Hugs))
