I am unable to nurse DD (now 2 weeks old) due to her cleft palate. I've been renting a hospital grade pump and am hoping that I can get my insurance to pay for it since it's a medical necessity. But when I called and talked to the Customer Service, they gave me the standard response that Insurance doesn't cover rental of pumps. I would completely agree if I was just doing this for convenience but unfortunately am doing this out of necessity. Her doctor has written a note that this is a medical need but my Insurance rep didn't even care. Has anyone had any luck with getting Insurance to pay for this? How did you go about doing this?

My insurance stated that they would cover a breast pump only if it was determined to be medically necessary. So, if they're telling you that they do not cover it regardless, then I think your SOL.
Basically, the lactation consultant submitted paperwork stating I had engorgement issues (those were the days! I wish I still had that problem instead of the opposite!) and voila, insurance is covering the rental of the pump 100% in 3 month increments (the company even delivered it to my house, and will pick it up), they even supplied the tubing, flanges etc free as well.
