Breastfeeding

sick & breastfeeding

I have a sore throat right now which might turn into a cold :(  Am I allowed to take anything for a cold?

  • Stay away from decongestants like sudafed if your supply isn't well established, it can dry you up. Push fluids, take tylenol and rest.

The best thing you can do for LO is nurse because you'll pass on your antibodies and hopefully they won't get sick.

  • You can take dextromethorpan, which is a cough suppressant but pretty useless IME. All other decongestants are either contraindicated or can mess with supply. When I'm sick, I just take Tylenol and Advil and suck up the congestion. Feel better!

  • Well according to Kellymom (which I know is not a doctor or LC) Sudafed is safe for breastfeeding babies, but I was warned that it could mess up my supply. I took it anyway because I have a decent supply and also a deviated septum, which makes sinus congestion debilitating.

Also I was told I could take plain robitussin (not the long acting type). Not sure what is in the long acting type that is not good for you... And lots and lots of Ricola (it doesn't have menthol, which is also a baddie).

I thought menthol was fine? I've been taking menthol eucalyptus cough drops for, like, a week. Crap!

Ok, Kelly Mom just says that in large quantities it could decrease your supply. I am not worried about that- but it would definitely be a concern combined with pseudoephedrine.
