Inductions: Whats going on....?

I feel like so many people are getting induced before they are even 40 weeks.

I was told that my insurance (a very common one - Blue Cross Blue Shield) would not cover inductions without a medical reason before 41 weeks.

Am I the only one? Are other people "getting around this" somehow? Do ya'all have true medical reasons, or are your docs embellishing or what?

So frustrated.... mu due date was 12/16, and due to the insurance as well as the holiday, could not get an induction scheduled until 12/27. Ugh! Super cranky today.

Re: Inductions: Whats going on....?

  • i have to call my insurance (BCBS) because my office's practice is to not let you go past 41 weeks. thanks for the reminder!

the current plan is between 40 and 41. they offered at 39, but i said no. there's no reason for me to. the concern in my case is holiday staffing, i don't know how they'll word it. another thing to ask tomorrow.

  • I have private insurance that I received after I was working for a month and a half at the job I started right after we found out I was pregnant and I receive medicaid for my pregnancy and 2 months after since my insurance didn't kick in soon enough for me to be covered the first part of my pregnancy.  My doctor and I have been talking induction since about week 13 due to possible issues.  When all the test came back negative we stopped talking about it.  We started talking about it again around 32 weeks after very intense pre-term labor and a hospital stay.  Once that happened we started monitoring everything closely and I have had more hospital trips for pre-term labor since then.  We decided on a date at my appt. last week for this coming Wednesday the 21st since I was having so much pre-term contractions (that weren't BH) and my cervix seemed to dilate and then regress.  I don't know how my insurance would cover it but with Alabama Medicaid I get the same options as anyone else would.  So even if I didn't have a medical reason I could go by the FDA guidelines that say at 39 weeks I could have an elective induction.

BCBS varies greatly from state to state. What state do you live in?

  • While I didn't need one (LO was born at 36 weeks) I was told by my doc that if I wanted, I could have one at 39 weeks since it was my 2nd and I had a successful induction/delivery with DD.  And that unless it was medically necessary she wouldn't induce before then.

  • I think a lot of it my have to do with the holiday. My doctor asked me if I wanted to get induced tomorrow. My due date isn't until Wednesday! I guess in my case, he is trying to avoid the holiday. I haven't even thought about the insurance coverage because I said no.

  • I'm being induced only because I have Gestational Diabetes. Tomorrow is the big day!

  • I was induced at 38 weeks due to medical reasons. I was high risk due to high blood pressure and a clotting disorder. Plus, I have a narrow pelvis so the OB thought it would give me a better chance for a vaginal delivery. I'm glad to have gone ahead with it because everything went so smoothly.

  • What state do you live in? I have BCBS also. I haven't been told anything about inductions not being covered. However, I don't have one scheduled either. My office won't let me go beyond 41 weeks with my swelling and bp issues, at least that's what I've been told. 41 weeks for me is New Years Day and like uncharch, they won't schedule an induction on the holiday so I am figuring it will be scheduled for the 28,29 or 30th depending on staffing for those days.

I guess my case is a little different, b/c my bp would make my induction (should I need one) medically necessary.

41 weeks will be New Year's Day for me too, but my OB is talking January 2 if LO doesn't come by then. Apparently it's popular at this small hospital to schedule elective inductions at the end of the year to make sure and get the tax deduction, so the schedule is pretty much full.  I haven't had bp issues though, so that's why the doctor would be comfortable with waiting.

  • Insurance rules differ by state and by policy - just because BCBS won't cover a medically unnecessary induction for you doesn't mean it won't for others.  And I also think it doesn't take much for a doctor to code one as necessary for even a minor reason.  It's all just how they bill the insurance, doesn't usually require a written explanation or anything

  • I was induced yesterday because the pregnancy was causing damage to my back. I was exactly 39 weeks. While it wasnt life or death it was for medical reasons .

  • I find out tomorrow for sure, but so far my Dr. plans to induce me at 39w 3d (Tues) because of my blood pressure.  It has been high throughout the pregnancy, but spiked in the 3rd trimester.  Even taking 200mg of Labetalol twice a day it has been in the 140/100 range and the longer I go the more of a possibility there is of complications.  My LO has been consistantly measuring a week ahead so I think we both feel a little more comfortable with it.  (I also have BCBS and have never heard/read anything about inductions not being covered--I'm in MO.)

  • My Dr didn't want me to go past 41 weeks b/c they knew my exact conception date. The night I was scheduled to go in for cervical ripening, I had gone into labor that morning. My Dr and hospital will not do elective inductions. They are very strict about it.

  • my doctor is inducing me on boxing day, i do have GD though and they are concerned about babies size, my medical covers EVERYTHING, we don't have to pay a CENT out of our pocket for anything, thank god, because if my induction turns into a c-section, then i will have to stay in the hospital for at least a week.

  • Im getting induced tomorrow night at 39weeks 1 day.  I have had PTL issues and for some reason have labor contractions that are strong and very steady (every 2-3 min) for weeks with no change in my cervix.  They said I could wait but we would likely end up with a c-section or induction next week anyway.  So, they want to just go ahead and try now instead of waiting and having a possible c-section.  .

  • I have BCBS and they cover them after 39 weeks unless medically necessary before. I'll most likely getting mine right at 40 because I'm looking at the potential of a 10lb baby, low amniotic fluid, my BP has been going up, and the pain is getting to the point where I can't walk without crying.

I think it seems like a lot of people have early inductions and csections but I think that's just because we know more about the risks of certain medical issues that would have probably caused still births and other life threatening issues before. Everyone that I have known that has had a csection or induction has had a legitimate reason  to. Not everyone is lucky and has a perfect, worry free pregnancy. People are way too judgmental of how other women deliver their babies without knowing the full story (my SIL...but I don't tell her much because she's a dumba$$ anyway and she wouldn't understand) I don't discuss ALL my issues regarding my pregnancy with people because its really none of their business and its just a downer...

  • As with most medical procedures, I would assume it wouldn't take much "embellishment" on the doctor's part to schedule an induction earlier than your insurance would prefer.  They just need to provide documentation as to why.  A lot of insurances don't initially cover a 20-week ultrasound (which I think is fairly common) but once the insurance company receives a letter of explanation they'll pay.  I would think, even in a perfectly healthy pregnancy, it would be very easy for a doctor to come up with a non-lie/non-embellishment that would satisfy an insurance company to pay for the induction.
