Breastfeeding

Low BM Production??

My LO is 10 days old. When I nurse she never seems to be satisfied. After a few awful days of constant feedings and a starving LO I decided to try pumping. (The hospital and Pediatrician told me not to.) I didn't get anything at all! That night we started supplementing formula. My pediatrician believes formula is the F word and tried to send us to a lactation specialist. I decided to try pumping every 2 hours to see if I could increase my production. It did work, but I am still only expressing between 1 to 2 oz combined! My question-Is there any harm in doing both formula and breastmilk? I am just not producing enough to BF exclusively.

Re: Low BM Production??

  • I would meet with an IBCLC just to make sure your LO is latching right and everything is going correctly when you breastfeed.

At this age, the baby is going to want to eat what seems like all.the.time. Their stomachs are really small and can't hold a lot, plus breast milk digests faster than formula, which causes them to eat more frequently.

1-2oz total per session at this point is good! Your LO can't hold much more than that at this age, so your body is working.

There is no harm in combining BM/formula; it is all a personal preference.

  • Just as a reference at 10 days old my DS was practically living on my boob.  I never once supplemented with formula and my supply it totally fine now.  By 8-10 weeks he was eating every 2.5-3 hours.  It was rough, but right now is the time that is used to establish your supply.

  • If you supplement your supply WILL go down. I too rec seeing a LC and one that works with a dr. can prescribe Domperidone if they are willing if you truly have low supply. I was on it several times and it saved me with BFing... LO is 15 months and we're still going.

  • In the first few days home we were having 2 hour marathon feedings. When I told this to my Ped he told me that the breast is empty in the first 5 minutes and not to go more than 30 minutes per breast. Either way she was still rooting, turning her head back and forth, sucking on anything that would come near her mouth. (except for the pacifier) She was peeing and pooping, but is going far more regularly now with supplementing formula. Her latch is perfect and has been since the hospital. Sometimes it takes a minute to get it right, but for the most part she latches like a champ!

I have been pumping every 2 hours. Today I have been getting 3 oz combined. So my production has increased. I think that since this is helping I will continue to pump and feed her BM via bottle.
