Pregnant after a Loss

No way I can be preg, right?

Please help me! I had a m/c on 11/21. Confirmed with ultrasound on 11/22. Returned to OB 11/28 and bleeding had stopped but OB said she still saw just a little tissue/blood left (with ultrasound). Took urine preg test at office on 11/28 came back positive. Had sex with DH for first time on 12/10. He pulled out and swears he didn't ejaculate inside me (sorry if TMI). Decided to pee on a stick today expecting BFN and to confirm all preg hormone out of my system. Got a huge BFP - very dark second line.

Please tell me it's impossible that I'm preg again so soon?! Right? I'm freaking out b/c my OB told me to wait 2 cycles and I haven't been so good with my PNVs. I've been reading on the internet and most women say they have BFNs 3-4 weeks after m/c. I am 4 weeks out so could it still be leftover hormone or a new preg? If new preg isn't one week from sex too soon to see BFP? I'm freaking out b/c last time I saw BFP 12 days after sex.

If any of you have had any experience with this or any information at all I would really appreciate it. Thank you.

Re: No way I can be preg, right?

  • You know pulling out is like the worst form of BC ever right? (I am really trying to not sound rude)

I say that if you had unprotected sex with your SO then it is 100% possible that you are pregnant. All I can say is call your OB and have some blood work drawn and maybe another u/s.

  • It's unlikely - you probably haven't even ovulated yet.  I would call your OB ASAP to tell them this.  It could still be the hormone, but it's best to talk to your doctor immediately.  And I agree with PP - pulling out =/= birth control

  • I am curious why your OB did not encourage a D&C when she discovered leftover tissue?  Being that you are only 7 days out from unprotected sex I am going to say that this is leftover pregnancy hormones that are causing the bfp.  The only way to know for sure is to have your OB do a blood draw and then repeat in 2 days.  Generally speaking it takes anywhere from 6-12 days for a fertilized egg to implant in the uterus and then once implanted I believe it takes an additional 24-48 hours for the body to produce enough hcg for it to be picked up on an HPT.

Definitely call your OB and if you're not pregnant take the necessary precautions to follow your drs orders and wait two cycles.  Give your body and your heart time to heal. Good luck and I am sorry for your loss.

  • I highly doubt it. If you had a + test at the OBs on 11/28 and then had sex just 12 days later, I'm guessing you still have the same old HCG in your system left over from the miscarriage. Especially if there was still tissue in there when you took your test---it takes awhile to clear out, in my experience. I doubt you have even ovulated.

My HCG was still in the 30s less than 1 month out from my loss.  Which could still be a BFP on a urine test depending on how sensitive.

The only way to know for sure is to get a beta blood test to see if your numbers are rising or falling. And actually, based on my horrific experience with a prolonged m/c that ended with hemorrhaging and a D&C because of retained tissues, I would demand another US to see if the tissue is gone yet.

And use condoms if your doctor asked you to wait 2 cycles, lesson learned, right? I know it sucks and it's hard to commit to that but it's really important to listen to your doctor's advice, IMO.

  • It would help to know how far along you were when you when you found out about the m/c. My guess is that it is probably leftover HCG in your system from your loss, especially if you still have retained tissue. With my 1st m/c I was 10wks when I found out about the loss but the baby only measured between 6 and 7 weeks and it still took an additional 6 weeks after I had the m/c for my numbers to go down to zero. And if your dr told you to wait 2 cycle please use some kind of birth control to make sure your body is ready before you get pg again. Sorry for your loss and GL.

  • only way to know is to get either levels tested or an u/s.  either way call your dr.

From what I have read that you can still have pg hormones in your system for 2+ months after a m/c.  I think you don't even get your period until all is out.  It took me 9 weeks after m/c to get AF.

We waited to have sex at all until that 1st AF.

but def call your dr so you know for sure.

  • It's most likely residual hCG from your miscarriage. I would definitely call the doctor and see what they say. If you're still getting a very strong +HPT, there might be retained tissue. Good luck!

  • I agree with all PP. It depends on how far along you were when you had your m/c but I bet it is left over tissue. I had a +hpt for 2 months after my m/c but I know that is not the norm. Definitely call your OB and have them check again. GL!

  • Thanks for all your replies. I know it was stupid not to use condoms and we are definitely going to do that from now on until we TTC. It was one time and it was not a good idea, and I'm glad to be reminded of it again - this scare was definitely a wake up call.

I feel better hearing that many of you continued to have positive home preg tests even weeks/months after the m/c. I m/c'd at 8.5 weeks - I know that the baby was measuring that far along b/c I had been to the ER 2 days before m/c and they had done an ultrasound and measured the baby and it still had a heartbeat.

To the couple of posters who asked about D&Cs - I am not sure why my OB did not do it. Everything had gone naturally and she said since my cervix wasn't open and she didn't see that much tissue/blood in there to warrant doing a D&C. But now I'm wondering if that was the right idea - b/c she wanted me to wait 2 cycles and the longer it takes for me to get the first cycle the longer it will be till I can TTC. I'm going to call her first thing tomorrow. Sigh - this is the second questionable thing my OB has done since I found out I was preg and then m/c'd. I am thinking I may switch my OB.

Can I ask if anyone had a natural miscarriage and the bleeding stopped but there was still tissue left that forced them to have a D&C?

For those of you who said that you had positive preg tests after the m/c (and knew you weren't preg), were you still bleeding or spotting during the time you got the positive preg test? Was there anything you had to do to get your first period? Any intervention? Thanks

I had spotting and bleeding off and on for 10 weeks.  I would spot a few days then nothing then have heavy bleeding for a day then nothing, etc, etc, etc.  I finally called the dr. after 8 weeks of spotting and bleeding and they followed my hcg until it got to 10 (after 8 weeks of bleeding it was at 29 and it took a couple more weeks before it got to 10 (which she considered a non-viable pregnancy).  They even did another ultrasound ((I had a d&c)) to check for remaining tissue and there was nothing).  I then started hemorraging so I went to ER and they sent me home stating it was my "first post m/c period".....ummmmm, ok?!?  A week later I was in surgery with a pelvic infection.  So my case was really extreme and uncommon.  After my surgery the bleeding stopped within a week and I was placed on birth control for a few months to get regulated but like I said I am a rare case.

  • After my m/c my OB drew blood 2 weeks in a row and then had me take a pee test 2 weeks later and told me that there was a possiblity that it would still be positive and to keep taking them weekly until they are neg. It is most likely leftover hormone from your miscarriage. I would give your Dr a call and have them to do consecutive blood draws. T&Ps
