Traveling with an infant

How easy it to travel (by plane) with an infant?  My husband will possibly have a work trip to Aruba in February, when our little one will be about 6 or 7 weeks old, and I'm wondering if we should consider going with him.  We live in MN, so flights would be about 3 hours to Miami and then another 4 hours to Aruba.  I've heard babies travel pretty well, since they still sleep a lot at this point, but if anyone has previous experience with this, I'd love to hear it!

(I do realize we'll need a passport, and we'd probably have to pay extra to get this in time.)

  • I have also heard that when they're very young they travel well because they sleep so much, but I don't have personal experience to speak from.

  • I've heard the same thing, BUT what are you going to do with a baby that small in Aruba?  They can't be out in the heat/sun for extended periods of time, and they can't go in the pool or anything... it is going to be a mighty boring vacation sitting inside of your hotel room with a newborn.

  • Being a fellow Minnesotan...Id totally go. You will want to get out of here by then! Were looking at FL in the spring...maybe twice for 2 weddings. But well see...you can walk and keep baby in the stroller and shade- Id easily find things to do and would welcome the sunshine after a long winter of being inside and cold! Ive been told to feed them on the ascent and descent since the swallowing helps their ears not pop and it helps them not scream from the popping. I havent done it myself but I would and probably will go to at least one of the weddings in S Florida. Your pediatrician will have the best insight though.
  • Good points, and thanks, Shelbyrae00 for being able to relate! :)  My in-laws will also be on the trip, so I'm sure between my mother-in-law and me, even if we do take turns or spend more time inside than usual, it'd be a good chance to escape the MN tundra!  Who knows--we may not even have the chance to go, but I just wanted to check and see if others had any good or bad experiences on this front.  And I was definitely thinking about feeding on the ascent and descent to help baby's ears.  Hopefully, that would help!  And yes, I'll definitely check with our pediatrician for a good final answer.  Thanks again!
  • In my personal experience it is so much easier flying with a baby then a toddler.  Babies will sleep most of the way and you can easily nurse them, give them a bottle or a paci to help with the ear pressure.

My DD flew like a champ when she was a baby.  Once she learned to crawl and walk it was horrible to keep her still for the flight and she was also fussy because she wanted to move around.

I think the trip sounds great!

  • In the middle of cold and flu season, I would NOT get on a plane with an infant.

I would not worry about this.  Lots of people in warm climates have babies and don't sit inside all day long.  It's February, so the average temp is in the low 80s, so it is not crazy hot.  Just stay in the shade with the baby.

  • Everyone keeps telling me that infants are so much easier to travel with than toddlers.  So go, go while you can.  Enjoy all that sunshine and heat and vitamin D conversion.  And have something blended and delicious with an umbrella in it for the rest of us stuck in the great frozen north.

  • No clue about flying, but we took a 12 hr car ride from MN to southern KS when DD was 10 weeks.  I was really worried it'd be tough but she honestly slept most of the time, which really surprised me.  So I would imagine that flying would be just as easy, if not easier.  NBs really don't do a lot at that point.

I would just make sure you've recovered enough that you feel comfortable flying and carrying all that stuff.  But if we could afford it and everything I'd probably go :)
