  • Ohholycrap.  Indifferent  I use tap water that's been through a pur water filter.  I'm totally buying bottled water to use now.

  • Oh man, that's nuts! I've been using just straight tap water. Would it be totally gross to pour from the same gallon jug of distilled water for weeks on end? And do you think it'd be fine to boil tap water to refill the gallon jug? I don't like buying bottled water if I can avoid it.
    .
  • sonofa. My husband saw this. Just what we needed. One more thing for him to be paranoid about.
    Dear Bump: You suck.
  • My mom uses one!  I need to email her this article. Brain eating? omg.
  • I totally didn't see this and made my own post. If someone can, please reply to it so it will let me delete.

Yours truly developed a rather nasty fungus infection after using tap water :( It took 3 weeks to clear up and in the mean time, it always smelled like raw hamburger meat that had spoiled (gag with me now). I know it's so much easier to just run some hot water when you're trying to Neti 3x a day but believe me, it's not worth the risk.

Distilled is really best because our water is so high in dissolved minerals but if you have a filter to get some of that out, refilling the jug is definitely preferable to using tap water. It takes me about 2 weeks to go through a jug. Just don't touch the inner cap and it's no biggie. It's sterile so there's really nothing for microorganisms to grow on.

  • So what do you bottled water users do?  Heat the water in the microwave/on the stove and then carry it back to the bathroom?  I'm not saying it's not worth it to avoid getting sick, but that sounds like a huge PITA especially if you're bathroom is upstairs.
  • Yes, it is a huge PITA. My bathroom is upstairs too. I try to bring my Sinu Rinse squeeze bottle thingie down with my phone. I have it pretty well timed. It takes 34 seconds in the microwave to get the bottle to perfect temp once filled. I usually use 40 seconds which is too hot at first, but it's perfect once you take it upstairs, brush your teeth, get the shower warm and then get in to get clean and do the "neti" thing at the same time.

I've gotten used to just keeping everything downstairs instead of only doing the rinse in the shower. It's the only way I can manage more than once a day.

  • I keep all of my sinus rinse stuff in the kitchen and just do my rinses in the kitchen sink. I need to be better about using distilled or boiled water, though. Taytee, I had no idea you could get a fungal infection from using tap water!
