Vent: Work replacement teacher

I called my administrators to let them know about my pregnancy back on July 1. My vice principal asked if I had any idea what my plans for leave were because she had a few ideas she'd like to try out for my sub replacement. Fast forward to December 17 and I still haven't heard anything from them. My last day is Friday.

I asked them in September what was going on and what I could let the parents know since I knew they'd all be curious. They said to let them know they were starting the process of looking for someone. At conference time in November, I asked again since I knew it would come up, and it did. I again had to tell parents they were still looking but I didn't know anything more than that. I had my post-observation meeting with my VP last week and again she told me they were looking and "getting close" (well yeah, my due date is getting really close, too) Then I was told I'd know by Thurs. or Fri... well those passed, too. Two people I knew they were looking at (because the individuals told me they had interviews, admin. didn't say a word to me) were a newly retired teacher from our school who taught my grade previously and a student teacher who just finished in another grade. How I prepare for either of those replacements would be very different.

Well I just got an email from the student teacher that she was told at our Christmas party (I couldn't attend) by our principal that she had the job and they'll introduce her to my class on Wednesday. I am so completely annoyed at how unprofessional they've been about this and how they've handled it. I'm kind of insulted that they didn't even email me or call me to let me know who the person would be.

 Sorry so long...

  • Oy. Well I'm glad at least the student teacher talked to you- so hopefully you two will be able to communicate much better with each other than admin did with you. I hope the transition goes well as you prepare for a first-time teacher to take over and introduce her on Wednesday! Woo lots to do!

  • I am a teacher as well.  My sub was changed when one of my teammates fell ill so I have a new replacement.  I think it's important to realize a few things.  Regardless of how much you plan and write down for the sub, they will most likely do things their own way.  Also, the kids will be fine.  There will be a period of time with the sub where both teacher and students will be getting used to each other too.  As far as pressure from parents, it's really not your job to make them feel good about your leave.  That's administration's job.  Maybe I'm just a little tired of our over involved, micromanaging parents....but really, their kids will be just as successful whether or not I choose to have a baby, which is my right. Give the sub a basic outline and say good bye.  You said your sub has only student taught?  They most likely are going to have issues and will probably need to depend a lot on your team for help.

You're right. I have no reservations about leaving my class with her. I saw my last leave that the world goes on and they'll all be fine. Our parents are very micromanaging most of the time, but these parents have been great. I kind of feel bad for them because they've been stuck in the dark, as well. Since I'll be out for the remainder of the year my replacement is important to them, but they've been very patient.

My vent was mainly over how administration has handled it and how unprofessional they've been in keeping me informed.
