When I first had DD, I was too afraid to BF her in public, so I always took a bottle of pumped milk with me if we went anywhere. I finally got to the point at around 3 months old that I didn't care anymore, so I stopped bringing it and began to actually build my stash. Fast forward to 6 months old, and now DD HATES taking a bottle, it doesn't matter if it's from DH, my mom, or me! I've gotten her to take a 5oz bottle here and there, but it is a huge fight at first! She screams and cries and spits the bottle out, then apparently gives up bc she takes it in the end, and downs the whole bottle! Wtf? I feel like if she gets hungry enough she will take a bottle from someone if I'm out, but the thought of her fighting it and hating it so much breaks my heart. Can anyone relate? Any suggestions on getting her to take a bottle better are greatly appreciated!
ETA: I absolutely love BFing and I don't plan on stopping anytime soon, but it's super frustrating to think that I will have a hard time leaving her with anyone bc she won't take a bottle from them!
Re: Help! DD hates taking a bottle
Is she doing solids? You could always have them feed her solids while you're gone if she gets hungry, then just nurse later.
With my kids, it took them going to daycare and taking bottles regularly before they would do it consistently. I don't know if it'd be worth going through the hassle if you don't NEED her to take one.
My son loved straw sippies. Also, are you trying the bottles while you're not there? The other thing that helped with DS was having bottles very warm and not holding him in cradle position. He preferred to face away from whoever was feeding him (or even be in a bouncy seat).
Will she use a straw?
DS wouldn't take a bottle and I wasn't able to find a sippy that he liked, but around 6 months he would drink from a straw.
I just recently found the best spill-proof straw cups and he loves them and it's so much less messy than a straw in a regular cup. The only place I've seen them locally is Wal-Mart, but since he liked them so much I ordered 2 more sets from drugstore.com where they're a few bucks cheaper. GL!
Thanks so much! I totally just ordered a pair of those cups. I've given her a straw only once before, and she seemed to do great, so I'm excited to see if these work!
I hope these work out for you and your LO. I forgot to mention - you'll probably want to pick up a straw cleaning brush like this one I got at BRU, everything else does just fine in the dishwasher. GL!
