Natural Birth

I just don't understand...

I have a former coworker that is now a Facebook friend that just baffles me. She is pregnant and incessantly posts about the baby - I'm talking 20 plus posts a day. So she posts today "X amount of days until the due date, X amount of days until the induction date." Then explains she wants to have a natural birth, but wants an induction so she won't go into another month being PG. Why would anyone elect to induce when it makes it so much harder to have "natural birth"? And is it a natural birth anyway when you induce? Not to me. I guess the difference is "medical birth" vs. "vaginal birth". Of course I would never question her choices - it's her body - but I just don't get it.

  • She sounds like someone I would have hid a long time ago. I can't handle ignorance like that.

  • It sounds to me like she hasn't done a lot of research or talking to anyone to know what will happen.

When I was 16 I saw my sister in labor while she was being induced and I knew that wasn't for me. With our first I did all kinds of research and reading to help get me to the med free labor I wanted. But, I have also found that a lot of people say something, but don't want to do anything to help themselves get to that point.

I agree with pp that I would have hid her posts already.

  • I'm one of those ppl that has too much information and strong opinions for your own good, if it's contrary to what you think/feel/believe... I'd have flooded her with my "wisdom" by now to the point she'd either listen, shut up, or unfriendly me. lol

  • for some folks, the term "natural birth" is any sort of Vaginal birth. Induced or not, if they successfully do a VB, its natural. The stricter definition for natural birth, which most of us on this bump board think of, is an unmedicated, no interventions vaginal birth.

Sounds like your FB friend needs to come on over to the bump and get herself some "mommy education."

**and perhaps an outlet for her excitment other than facebook?**

  • 20+ post a day would get her hidden or unfriended for me!  I don't know anyone who posts that much about anything.

I know someone who was induced (three times, the first two tries failed) and ended up with a c-section.  In her birth story she kept saying that she wanted to do everything possible to avoid a c-section, but it was like um...not really when you're getting induced for NO other reason than hitting 41 weeks. But to each their own, right??  I'm just glad I got to make my own choices and have the birth that was right for me.

  • Yes, I agree with all of you, my thoughts exactly! While it is really hard to bite my tongue and not say, "Well, if you are inducing for these ridiculous reasons, you are most likely going to have a c-section and natural birth is an impossibility.." I don't. It really wouldn't do any good, because I have found out that just as I am stubborn about natural birth being best for the baby, proponents of medicalized birth are just as stubborn. I do not engage in any more "debates" with my friends because they just don't get it. I really need to hide her posts, it's like a train wreck and I can't look away!!!
