Kid Friendly Restaurants?

Hi there! This weekend is my 30th birthday, Yay ME!

Hubby and I had plans to meet my family in Lake Charles, LA; but plans changed last minute.  So now we will be here in Houston.  Since many friends have asked what our plans are for my big day, I thought it would be nice to have a get together at a local restaurant.  I haven't seen most of them since DD was born, she's 5mths now.

Basically, I'm asking for no presents just their time and I would like for them to pick up their own tab.  This seems a bit tacky to me, but it will be about 15-20 people total and we really don't have the money for that many people.

We are located in the Heights and our friends are scattered all over.  Looking for something central and low key, since we are bringing DD with us and a few of our friends have a kids as well.  My bday is Sunday but I'd like it on Fri or Sun.

Any suggestions?

Re: Kid Friendly Restaurants?

  • Lupe Tortilla has a sand/play area for kids.  I don't know if you can reserve tables around it or not, though?

I would say most Mexican restaurants (Chuy's, Cafe Adobe, etc.) are "kid friendly" - as in they are loud and so people don't notice if your kiddo is crying, etc.  It might be hard to get a table for 15-20 on a Friday or Sat night, though.

Willie's Icehouse also has a sand/play area, but I don't think there are any within town.

  • Maggie Rita's on Shepherd has been fine for our family. We order the fajitas for 2 as many times as is necessary for the group. It works out to be pretty reasonable price-wise. The patio tends to be vacant when the kids need to stretch their legs.

Our kids are 5 & 2 and they'll sit while eating.

There isn't a wait. People haven't discovered it yet.

Happy birthday. I hope you have a wonderful evening.

  • Mission Burritos on Shepherd, near Kirby, has a play area outside.

  • The Lupe Tortilla on Shepherd is a great location for a gathering like that. There is no sandbox, but I prefer my kids not play in sand while eating anyway. Staff is very accommodating of families.

Jenni's Noodle House on 20th is great. They have a giant concrete tube in the back for kids to play in and draw on with chalk. They also have a great kids' menu. It's BYOB and counter service (but they bring the food to the table for you), so easy for everyone to pay for their own.

Pie In The Sky on 19th near Shepherd is smaller but super family friendly, too. The atmosphere is super casual and the owners have a couple of kids themselves.

Lola on Yale @ 11th. Fun, casual with great food. Also counter service with food brought to the table. Also BYOB. The only problem is you can't really get more than 10 people sitting together because the tables don't move (unless it's nice enough to sit outside)

I do like Maggie Rita's but I have to throw in a but: they don't have a kids menu and although they are willing to make something in a smaller portion, it was more $ than we usually pay for a kids meal. Also some people are not comfortable making kids meals out of adult meals and with a group that big, you might want to take the path of least resistance.

Berryhill on 11th is the family vortex in the Heights. Again, counter service but with a full bar. Kids are allowed to be somewhat feral on the patio, which is completely enclosed so no escaping to the street. bring lots of pennies for the fountain.

Everywhere I suggested is pretty much in or around the Heights but all with super easy access from the highways so should be a quick trip for people from all over the city.

Happy Birthday! Hope you have a great night.
