Treating a burn on DS's finger

I guess DS touched FILs steamer yesterday while they were watching him . I noticed it this morning and his middle finger is blistering a bit. How can I go about treating his burn especially since he refuses to let me put or keep anything on it. Going to buy neosporin (sp?) and keep eyeing for when it pops. Any other suggestions? This is the first time I deal with a burn on a LO .

Re: Treating a burn on DS's finger

  • Burns on a toddlers face or hands are much more serious than a burn somewhere else on the body. You need to take him to see a doctor ASAP.

Ds burned his hand on a lamp a year ago. It was only a second degree burn, but because it was on his hand, he needed several weeks of physical therapy and treatment from a plastic surgeon.

Burns on the hands and fingers that are not treated can result in scar tissue that will restrict movement for the rest of their life. This is why even a second degree burn on the hand needs medical attention.

eta: a second degree burn is when it blisters, like your LO. The biggest concern for a burn initially is the risk of infection. Your kid needs to have that burn properly wrapped and covered with sterile dressings, no matter how small it is. We would spend a good 15 minutes wrapping DS's hand in ordero make it "toddler proof".
