Trouble sleeping on Left side

I know we are "supposed" to sleep on our left sides to help with blood flow and back pain.  I have been trying to sleep on my left side and feel that my lower back pain is now worse! I have a hard time getting comfortable and all day today my back and butt has been bothering me a lot. I keep flipping onto my back still too, which could be the cause of my back pain, but I can't stay on the left side.

What are you doing to sleep comfortably?  Anyone not comfortable sleeping on your left side too?

Re: Trouble sleeping on Left side

  • My doctor specifically said it didn't matter which side.  I usually end up sleeping on both throughout the night.

  • Either side is supposedly okay, unless they tell you specifically to sleep on your left side! I'm still able to sleep on my back (my doctor said it was fine unless I felt pressure in my head, sort of like sinus pressure, or other alarming symptoms, and thus far I haven't), but I do prop myself up into a slight sitting position to do this. Maybe being at more of an angle like this would help you!

  • I lay however is comfortable at the time-- left, right, back-- as long as I can fall asleep, I'll lay that way.  I wake up at least 3-4 times a night to roll over and get comfortable again, so I'm not too worried about anything.

me too.. lately I find myself sleeping across the bed as opposed to top to bottom lol.. last night I slept across the top of the bed with all the pillows lol.

One of the joys of being a short ass .. hubby works nights but I sleep "normally" on his off days

This is a great idea! May take some pressure off of my lower back even.

It made a huge difference for me. It isn't even a 45-degree angle...just enough to provide some lift. A wedge pillow under your normal pillow can help, too!

  • I can't sleep on my left side because I wake up with horrible shoulder pain. So I don't even try.  I sleep on my right side and half the time I wake up on my back.  I am not that concerned about it.  My doctor said that your sides are best but I don't think that any of our mothers or grandmothers were concerned about sleeping on their backs (if that was the way they slept comfortably) and we all turned out fine.

  • I sleep on either side but occasionally wake up on my back. It has helped a lot to have big body pillow between my legs (helps my hips & lower back) and then I also got one of the boppy wedge pillows for my belly which has also taken pressure off my stomach and back as well. I have become a pro too at rolling over with my wedge and I have been sleeping SO much better since I got it!

  • Also just to note that even before being pregnant the pillow between the legs trick helped ease my lower back pain (I have an old back injury so I have issues all the time) so if that is where you are hurting I would especially try that. It helps align things while you sleep.

  • I've been seeing my chiro for sciatica pain.  I woke up the other morning on my back and for the first time in forever I could get up and walk to the bathroom without pain.  Sleeping on my side however causes horrible pain when I first get up from bed.  Go figure.  So even though I don't want to sleep on my back I am not fighting my body's natural instinct to roll over onto it if it feels better.
  • My left hip has been giving me a lot of problems so I've been sleeping on my right. Baby isn't bothered by it.

  • You know those massage tables with the face-hole cut out of it? I want one of those with a belly-hole cut out with like a net or something for a little support. Like a pp, I'm a "hardcore" tummy sleeper and it sucks having to sleep on my side. I cannot sleep on my back. Never have been able to.  If I accidently roll on my tummy while asleep I feel "POW POW POW" and I can imagine baby saying "Biitch, get off me!" (Because if she really is my baby, that's exactly what she's saying :P )
