need tips on helping my over supply

i just figured out that i'm making too much foremilk and LO is not getting enough hindmilk. he spits up alot,is very gassy, and when i pump the bottles have almost no fat in them compared to when i breastfed for DS. I've tried feeding lo on one side for the 2hr period but after 10-15min when the breast feels emptied he won't latch on to that breast anymore. even if he's hungry he won't latch, but he will to the other side which is more foremilk again!

is there anything i can do as far as pumping?

  • I was told to hand express some of the foremilk then offer the breast.

  • Great article on oversupply:

I actually block nursed for 4 hours to get my oversupply under control.  When I pump at work (LO was 16 weeks old when I started) it's only twice an 8-hour-day for about 10 minutes and I get 5 oz per side the first time, 3 oz or so the second time.  How much are you getting when you pump?  I'm guessing that there is a reason you're pumping - because if you can cut it out, that would help with the oversupply... then you'd only produce as much as the baby needs instead of extra (in theory).  Good luck!

that was a great article! how long did it take for things to get "normal"?. i started pumping a little to help get a little stash for when i'm away from babt and when i start working again. but LO has been spitting up and up all night long so i knew he was hungry.

  • After I started block nursing for 4 hours, it took less than a week for him to be less colicky, but when I pump at work, I still produce more than he needs, so I wouldn't say it's completely under control yet.  I understand wanting to get a stash for when you work, but maybe for a few days, try to just block nurse without pumping.... it might help.  Also, if you have oversupply, you might have the same situation that I do, that I am freezing extra every week - I get 2-4oz extra each work day, believe it or not.
