purchase own nightgown for giving birth?

I'm really modest and I'm terrified of hospitals.  I do not want to walk around in a hospital gown with my butt hanging out.  I'd like to be able to walk around the hallways or what have you and I want my back and butt totally covered while I do that (obviously in the beginning stages of labor).  I want to buy something comfortable to wear to give birth in that has buttons in the front so I can quickly/easily nurse after the baby is born.  Also, i want to spend less than 15 dollars on it so I can just throw it out after the birth.

Can anyone link me to a nightgown like this?  Or if you purchased one, can you link me the one you purchased?

 Thanks.

  • I'm planning to pick up a cheap dark colored rope (I've seen them all around for the holidays).  I'll wear this over the hospital gown or when company comes. I'm thinking if it's gross, I'll throw it away, but if it's not too bad, then since it's a dark color I can wash it and use it for any future kids.

  • From what I've heard, anything you bring to the hospital (as far as clothing) should be thought of as "disposable." So I'm going to wear a hospital gown, and bring a robe to wear over it when I need to get out of bed.
  • I would definitely do a robe rather than a nightgown. I actually think it's regulation to wear the hospital gown (at least at my hospital) for easier access for the med staff, especially in case of emergency. I brought a robe the first two times and it covered up my backside perfectly.

  • If you're thinking of just throwing it away afterwards why not check out your local thrift stores?  I've found night gowns at Goodwill for less than $7 that we used when we made duct tape dress dummies.

If you want to save your money you can always ask the hospital for a second hospital gown to wear as a robe so you can walk the halls without your bum hanging out.

I can sew so I'm making my own gowns to wear at the hospital.  The fabric wasn't very expensive and with coupons I saved even more.  If they get yucky I can throw them away.  I wanted something that had the ease of a hospital gown but that was flattering to my skin tone and would look good in pics.  I'm going to add some extra ties to the back of the gown to help keep it closed and I bought snap tape for the shoulder seams to make BFing easy.

  • Well normally they give you a hospital robe to cover everything up, but I agree I want something other than a scratchy hospital robe to wear. I got this in black

Its not the greatest, but I figure its black so it won't stain and it is really soft. With a robe over it I'd feel plenty comfortable walking around the hospital. Its pretty thin so I'd stick with black.... I've been wearing it around the house b/c its so comfy and it does have an easy access for nursing.

  • Target is having a 40% off sale on robes. I picked up a dark gray robe there yesterday, figuring it will be disposable but it was only $14!
  • Take a second hospital gown and put it on like a robe.  Modesty issue solved.  Wear a nursing tank underneath the gown and you will be nicely covered for nursing, just pull down hospital gown from the neckline.
