I have heard that a baby will refuse to breastfeed after they start to drink milk from a bottle. I am a dance teacher and only work a few hours a day, but sometimes I work late nights. I hope to be able to breastfeed and pump breast milk so my husband can feed our baby before putting her to bed on my late nights. I am scared that if I try to do both the baby will start to refuse my breast. I would be devistated because I am really looking forward to the bonding experience. Any tips? Advice? Is this just a myth? Any help would be appreciated.
Re: Baby refuse breastfeeding after using a bottle
Some babies will start to prefer the bottle over breast while others can switch back and forth without problems. I suggest using the lowest flow nipple for your bottles so the baby has to work a little to get milk. You want to make her work at it so she doesn't get lazy and start to prefer the bottle.
Most people recommend waiting until 3-4 weeks after birth to introduce a bottle to help establish your supply and to prevent confusion.

Not a myth for some, it is easier to get milk poured in your mouth than work to get it from a breast but there are some suggestions on the sites above. Establish good BFing first, intro bottle 4-6wks, feed baby upright w/o tipping bottle into mouth, slow flow nipple, pace feeds, feed the volume you pump (it is a common thing for FF babes to eat 8oz/feed but not for BF babes so send a more reasonable volume figuring around 30oz/day divided by # of feeds/day).
It can be done, many of us work and do extended BFing. GL!
