Breastfeeding

breastfeeding and zyrtec

hi all!

I'm due with my first on Feb 8.  I was okayed to take zyrtec during the pregnancy as I constantly suffer with allergies.

I would love to breastfeed once the baby arrives, but I'm still going to need to take my zyrtec.  Any suggestions on keeping milk supply up while taking and antihistamine?

TIA!

Zyrtec is safe in breastfeeding and most moms find they don't have any issue with supply as Zyrtec isn't as drying of an antihistamine as like Benedryl is.  It also keeps a slow/low dose in your bloodstream--that's why you can take it once a day-- which means you aren't dealing with times where it is really high in your system and times where it is low, which may effect supply more.

    just up your water intake,

try out taking a half dose if you have your allergies under control well-- I find after a few weeks of taking a full dose in the middle of allergy season, I can usually drop to taking a half pill once a day instead and still keep my allergies under control.

thanks.  this is encouraging to know.  i will see how taking a half a zyrtec handles things when i feel like my allergies are doing well.

  • My allergies are seasonal, so I took zyrtec for the first couple months I was bf-ing. It was not a problem at all for me (or baby).
  • I took it all through my pregnancy, and still take 10mg everyday. It hasn't effected my supply at all, and we are still EBF at 8 months.

Yup, except we're not quite to 8 months yet :) But no supply issues at all.

  • No problems here and we're still BF at 2 years old!
  • As PP mentioned, I take Zyrtec daily and I leak colostrum like crazy -- I go through several breast pads a day!  Obviously, it isn't drying me up.  It's just anecdotal, but it's a good sign, right?
