Perinatologist recs?

I am supposed to do a consult with a perinatologist at some point in the next two months or so. My midwife gave me a referral, but I saw the doctor she recommended once during my DD's pregnancy and didn't care for him. I don't have an OB, so rather than finding an OB and seeing who they work with, I thought I would prefer to find a good MFM and work backwards to an OB.

Anyone have a MFM that they really liked? I am in St. Paul and my insurance allows me to see anyone that I want (no care system restrictions). Thanks!

Re: Perinatologist recs?

  • I am so sorry for your loss.

I saw the group at Minnesota Perinatal Physicians. When you use their MFM, you do not have an additional OB (which I liked), and you rotate through the practice. I saw almost all of them throughout my pregnancy. They have an office near United in St. Paul and other offices around the metro.

GL and let me know if I can answer any other questions!

ETA: They deliver at Abbott and United.

  • I give the highest recommendation to Dr Leslie Pratt at Methodist Hospital (in the Park Nicollet system.) She has a rotating office, so I would see her at one visit, than one of the rotating PNs that came from Abbott at the next visit, etc. Abbott hospital is the only Level III hospital in this region (meaning they are the only ones equipped to deal with babies born before 32 weeks) so the PNs there are very experienced with difficult situations. Dr Pratt was named one of the top 100 doctors in the country in some magazine several years ago (unfortunately I forget which mag now.)

When I was using her during my last pregnancy (due to a prior stillbirth), they discovered I had Vasa Previa, which is very commonly undiagnosed, and is very highly fatal for babies. We are so lucky that they found it! I had to be in the hospital for one month prior to delivery for monitoring, then had to have a c-section 4 weeks before the due date. Dr Pratt also did my c-section, and they even called in another specialist to attend my delivery as well. Our baby turned out just fine, and was even able to go home with us. We credit our LO being alive to Dr Pratt and her team!

  • I'm so sorry to hear of the loss of your little boy.

I wholeheartedly second the recommendation for Dr. Leslie Pratt. She just happened to be the perinatologist on call when I went into labor at 25w5d. She was fabulous then, and I saw her a couple more times while I was in the hospital for the next few weeks. I also saw nearly all of the other perinatologists at Abbott during that time, they were (for the most part) great as well (I can dis-recommend certain ones if you need that information). She then followed the rest of my pregnancy as an outpatient and I totally credit her for helping me get to delivery at nearly full term (36w5d).

She is well-versed in the medical literature, but at the same time is careful to only apply the information when the situation warrants. She is upfront about information and her decision/ recommendation process. She also seemed to be a bit more conservative (read: careful, in a protective way) in her treatment recommendations than other perinatologists in the Twin Cities area. Her nurses and office staff are superb. I will be seeing her again, without hesitation, if we have another child.

I know St. Louis Park/ Methodist is a bit of a hike from where you live, but if you're willing to drive I feel it would be worth it. Confidence in your provider can make a world of psychological difference in a high risk pregnancy.

  • Thanks for the recs. I don't think I could handle a drive outside of St. Paul. I am positive (and my midwife thinks it is 'highly likely') that i had an abruption with DD. My labor with her was 2 hours from first contraction to delivery. My labor with my DS (placental abruption confirmed via ultrasound) was very quick as well. In both instances, the 'never ending contraction' (a sign that abruption has occurred) began during labor.

We aren't even close to the TTC phase by any means, but there is no sense in seeing a MFM that I wouldn't see with a pregnancy. And given my history, I want to be as close to the hospital as possible.

  • I also highly recommend the MN Perinatal Physicians.  I went to them after finding out about my daughter's Spina Bifida diagnosis at 20 weeks.  I saw a different doc each week, but I did see Dr. Pratt a couple times and really liked her.  I also really liked Dr. Lea Fairbanks and Dr. Ney.  Overall I was really impressed with the whole practice.  I also delivered at Abbott and LOVED it.  This was my first baby so I don't have anything to compare to, but I had an awesome experience.

  • I also want to tell you that you've been in my thoughts.  I am so sorry about your little guy, it really breaks my heart for you.  (((HUGS))))
