Used breast pumps?

Okay, so I've heard strong warnings against buying a breast pump used, but I've also been told you can buy one and then buy a new set of tubing etc. and it will be fine...

Is it safe to look on Craigslist and at garage sales, or should I cough up the money?

    If you buy used only get a closed (clean) system. I have an Ameda which I bought second hand and went and bought all new pump parts for it. Hygeia and the Lansinoh pumps are also a closed systems. Anything that was in contact with someone elses body fluids is not safe. Also keep in mind the pump itself, they do wear out...

    I am currently using one that was my sil's.  I didn't want to put a lot of money into one until I knew breast feeding would work out this time around since it didn't with ds.  I do plan on buying a new one before long but only because I want to pick my own out now.  I wouldn't buy an open system from someone I did not know though.
