3rd Trimester

Castor oil to induce labor

Just had to share. My bff was due yesterday to have her 2nd baby but there was no sign of labor at all. No Braxton hicks..0 dilation...nothing. Our doc (we have the same OB) suggested she drink a swig of castor oil. So 2pm yesterday she did. Nothing happened for 3 hrs, then she started having some mild contractions. 8pm I called to check on her and she had contractions at 2 min apart and was on way to the hospital. Baby was born at 2am. So all in all 12 hrs from nothing going on to baby. I was in total disbelief. I always thought it was an old wives tale.

  • This worked for my SIL, she's a nurse practitioner at the mother-baby unit of my hospital. Her concoction had a few other ingredients in it too. She used it with her first child.

She used grilled chicken parmesan with the next two children - swears by it.

I went the spicy jalapeno chips, bumpy car ride, and grilled pineapple route.

  • Castor oil can be used to induce labor. It stimulates the bowels which in turn, stimulate the uterus to have contractions. Be cautious about it though, this is something I found in an artice on the internet.

Reasons Why Some Women Choose Not to Use Castor Oil:
    1. Castor Oil can and has caused many women to have severe diarrhea during labor. As we know, labor is already painful and messy, adding diarrhea means more of the messy.

    2. Castor Oil can bring on severe cramping that does not always lead to labor. Many pregnant woman are already in enough pain and adding to this pain with no end result (other than a few trips to the bathroom) is not always worth the risk.

    3. For some, Castor Oil brings on contractions that are stronger and more painful than usual.

    4. Castor Oil will occasionally bring on strong contractions that eventually stop because your body or baby is not ready, which may result in the use of pitocin or a C-section to deliver your baby.

Hope you all have your babies soon!

    Thanks for the warning.

  • There have been other recent posts about it. Castor Oil causes diarrhea, which causes dehydration = not how I want to go into labor. It's not proven to help bring labor on so I feel like it's a risky thing to experiment with that may not even help.

  • Not sure if it worked for me or it was a coincidence but Saturday I drank 1 oz of castor oil with 4 oz of coke at noon.  Felt great all afternoon, contractions began at 5pm - had two or three soft poops while contracting early on, and delivered my baby girl at 7:36pm.   2.5 hours of labor.  We joke by saying we greased her up and she just slipped right out.

I was 40w4d and 2 cm dilated prior to trying.  I heard that it will be more likely to work if you are already dilated a bit and / or soft.

EDIT to add:  My OB approved the use of castor oil.  If you are thinking about it talk with your doctor.

  • All it did for me with my second daughter was make me puke! A friend said mix it into a drink and chug it. So now I hate the taste of sunny d and the plastic taste of castor oil. If you're gonna try it be sure u are over the dunk or trash just in case! Good luck

This.  Also, in the case of the OP's friend, it could be a coincidence.  Last time I had a very similar situation...except for the fact that I did not take caster oil.  So just because she did does not mean that it's what caused her labour.

I think she added lemon juice just to get it down easier.

Don't think it was a coincidence. I told my mom about it and apparently in Russia in the 80's (we're Russian)  this was THE way to induce labor. Our doc is old school Russian and has been telling my friend to do it for over a week now. She finally managed to scare her into it by telling her she's leaving to a conference on sunday so she better do this fri/sat lol or end up w/ the doc covering her.

  • p.s. yeah pooping during labor is not ideal but I'll take it over a petocin induction any day. I had one of those last time and the pain is indiscribeable (my epi didn't take too well so I felt a lot of the petocin) and I ended up w/ a c/sec.
