Prescriptions

For some reason I can't remember the answer to this question. We have Tricare Prime but our base doesn't have any OB's so I go off base. I pay nothing, when I get a prescription from that OB and they call it into like Target do I pay the co-pay or should tricare pay it all??

Re: Prescriptions

  • If you use a civilian pharmacy you'll have to pay a co-pay. You can avoid the co-pay if you fill the prescription on base/post. I used to fill prescriptions at CVS and I never paid more than a few dollars in co-payment.

  • If it is a prescription you will be taking for a long period of time you can do mail order with express scripts. I take thyroid medicine everyday and order a three months supply through express scripts. It cost $3 and they are delivered directly to my house.
  • You will have to pay for them.  I have use a civilian pharmacy and have never paid more than $9.  One of my son's medications for his skin would cost over $300 if we had to pay full price for it and it's only $9.

The prices have actually gone up for them recently.  I think instead of $3 generic, $9 brand name, and $22 non-formulary, it's now $5, $12, and $25.  That's still pretty great though.  And for the OP, filling them on base is always free (assuming they carry it).

  • Yep, the prices went up, but it's still pretty cheap in comparison.  Also, they will no longer fill brand if there is a generic available, so be prepared for a possible change there as well.   We used to have the option to pay more for brand.
