Babies: 9 - 12 Months

I can't keep her warm

Particularly her little hands and feet. Even during the day her hands are little icecubes Sad I can't put gloves or mittens on her b/c she loves her hands and I'm pretty sure they'd keep her from crawling, which would piss her off. And her feet are another issue. I usually put a pair of soft slippers over a pair of socks but it doesn't seem to help. At night it's even worse. Last night she was wearing 2 pairs of socks and a footed sleeper and they were still freezing this morning. I've tried less layers too, thinking they were cutting off her circulation but that didn't help. Her little hands and feet were purplish this morning Sad I feel so terrible.

Any ideas for what I can do short of turning my heat up to 70 (which we really can't afford!)?

Re: I can't keep her warm

  • I'm not really sure what to say, since I freeze if the heat is below 70...

Have you seen www.guardian-sleeper.com?  The fleece might keep her tootsies warm.

  • I wonder if the socks are too tight and they are cutting off circulation?

Maybe footed jammies w/o socks would be better?  And then a sleep sack on top?

That's a tough one.  poor babe.

  • Try putting a hat on her.  What temp. do you keep your heat at?  FWIW, I think I heard it's an extra $4/month for each degree you raise your heat.  Babies' circulation isn't as good as ours, but I'm not sure if her hands and feet should be purplish.  Does she sleep with a sleepsack?
  • We do a footed sleeper with a fleece sleep sack for nighttime, but it doesn't help with the hands.

Could you try putting on thick tights?  When it's really cold, we do thick tights with wool socks over them.

  • maybe flannel sheets on her crib? ds used to get up in the middle of the night really cold, we live in a really old house and his room gets a little extra cold at night, flannel sheets seem to help a lot and he sleeps with a fleece blanket also, he wears regular pjs but i put an extra shirt under.

  • It's cold in the upstairs bedrooms (where ours and Ben's rooms are)...so I put a little plug in heater in there.  I know you're probably not supposed to, but otherwise, it's just too cold.  It has a feature that turns off when it gets to a certain temp in the room, so I'd say it never gets any warmer than about70 in there.
  • I might try tights; that's a good idea. At night, she sleeps in a footed sleeper with a fleece sleep sack over it. And maybe another pair of socks in there. Or, I put her a lightweight footed sleeper with another fleece footed sleeper over it. I sometimes put her slippers on over the footies too (which helped for a bit, but doesn't seem to anymore) Sad Poor baby. It doesn't help that she has the coldest room in the house. It is literally 8 degrees cooler than the rest of the house. It's ridiculous.

  • seans: I might have to break out the little heater. I was trying to avoid that, but I'm afraid it's going to be our only option with her room being so cold Sad I guess I could at least heat her room up before she goes down for night.

And thanks also to the pp for the flannel sheets suggestion. I might try that.

  • Have you tried a space heater?  You know... we saran-wrapped our windows (dorky, I know), but our house is considerably warmer now... (with the heat at 65-67 during the day)

  • I know.  I didn't want to do it either, but it's just too cold in there.  Plus, the worst weather is yet to come.  With not being able to put a blanket in his crib (which he would kick off in a nano second anyway), I didn't know what other option there is.  He would freak out if I tried to put him in a sleep sack, even just to sleep.  Plus, I don't think they make them in his size anyway.
  • Is her door open or closed?  DD has a small room and if we close her door it gets really warm in there.  Maybe try flipping what ever you do with the door.  If the HVAC supply is big for her room size, it will warm it with the door shut.  If it is sized too small, leave the open to get the heat from the rest of the house.  You may also want to close off the vents to the rooms that you don't use often.

Also, take a candle or lighter around all you doors and windows and see if you have any drafts.  If so, caulk or insulate those areas.

Here is a website to help with weatherproofing.  https://www.ehow.com/how_2054632_weatherproof-house.html

  • Late to the game here but my son's room was also one of the coolest in the house so... we put his crib in our master bedroom for the winter and we'll sleep in the guest bedroom.  Despite the many discussions back and forth DH and I had before we came to this agreement, it ended up not being that big a deal.

DS is warm and happy and sleeping so much better now!  So we're all happier.  We'll switch back in the spring.
