Diaper rash in breastfed baby? Could it be from BFing?

DD has a HORRIBLE diaper rash....so bad I finally called the dr. today & they told me to bring her in.  Not only is it raw, but there are actually layers of skin gone & it's almost bleeding Sad

The dr. said it was a yeast diaper rash.  She implied that it could be made worse because she's breastfeeding, because she "squirts" all day long instead of consolidating her output...I guess because she's eating smaller amounts more frequently?  She said it keeps things more wet & allows the yeast to grow more quickly.

So, I'm wondering if anyone has experienced this, and would like to know

1)Could the rash be the reason DD has been crying practically NON-STOP for the past 3 days?

2)If your LO had a yeast diaper rash, did nystatin ointment help?  If so, how long did it take?  My LO is soooo miserable :-(

  • Poor thing!  Nystatin cleared up my older DD's rash in about a day when she was a baby.  Her rash wasn't that bad, but it does work fast.  It could be something you're eating.  Not sure what though.  Googling may be helpful.

    GL!

  • I'm sorry, it sounds like your doctor isn't very breast-feeding friendly.

    1. Yes, but there is a degree of normal newborn fussiness.

    2. My dd did have a yeast infections, the nystatin worked literally withing two diaper changes (it wasn't completely healed but was showing signs of being much better)

I would say let her bum air out as often as possible, use the ointment and when you aren't using it use a good diaper creme every single time... my daughters skin is sensitive and she always battled diaper rash.. I literally have always had to change her right away, she would get a rash overnight if I didn't change her diaper mid way!

Don't let the frequent nursing get you down, it is normal and eases with time, also consider finding a nicer pediatrician, one who doesn't put you down for nursing... I am very serious about this little things like that can undermine a mothers efforts and is (sadly) not uncommon with pediatricians, so search out a bf friendly one ASAP!

  • Ack! I'd guess that's probably why she's so sad, definitely, poor baby! Diaper rashes suuuck.

DS2 had a rash that wouldn't go away (it wasn't insanely bad or anything), and I tried Nystatin on it, but nothing happened, and it got even redder. The doctor then prescribed a combo of an anti-fungal and steroid cream that cleared it up. So FYI, if the Nystatin doesn't work in a day or so, definitely let them know.

I dunno, there's not much you can do about her pooping. I've never heard breastfeeding be blamed for super diaper rash before. Do you cloth diaper? If so, you might want to switch to disposables until it's cleared up. Hope she feels better quick!

  • This is the only time my LO cries is when she has a diaper rash.  The others have offered great advice, but I wanted to add to one thing that PP said - if you are using CDs, the yeast can live in there so you should STOP using them asap until the yeast is GONE 100% and you should treat the diapers to strip them.  The yeast will keep coming back otherwise.  If you don't CD, then you're good to go!  :-)

  • I noticed a diaper rash in C very early on, then I started seeing bloody mucus and green BM's.  Pedi thinks dairy senstivity.  So I am avoiding all diary for now, as I EBF.  Also I havent been able to use reg wipes on her since the hospital.  I keep a bowl of water with a little J&J soap in it and use tissues to clean her bum, then pat dry with a new tissue and let her air out as long as possible, then load her up with triple paste every time.  That is the only way I've been able to keep her skin intact and not burn her bum with wipes (even the sensitive ones).  GL!

  • No, the diaper rash is not from BFing. That's stupid. The only thing I might suggest is to change the diaper more often and let her be diaper free a couple of hours a day to air out. Also, let her dry before putting a new diaper on. Yes, Nystatin will help. Monistat can also help if you dont' have Nystatin. Hope your LO is better soon!

The pedi didn't actually imply that it was from BFing....I misworded my subject line.  What she was saying is that because she is BF, she is more likely to "squirt" smaller amounts of pee or poop frequently than a FF baby.  Because of this, things stay wet & acidic in there & create an easier environment for the yeast to grow.  It makes sense, since there is STILL a small squirt of poop in every single diaper change.

And I was using cloth wipes, although not cloth diapers yet.  But I fear that we re-infected her without realizing by using the cloth wipes, because she had this rash a few weeks ago & it resolved after we stopped using the cloth wipes (because we were sleep deprived & lazy).  It re-appeared once I started using them again.  I think I need to de-yeastify those wipes :(

  • Triple paste diaper rash ointment was a lifesaver for my LO...also I used wet paper towels instead of wipes but that got so annoying so I started using lansinoh wipes and they have been great.
