Getting nervous...

So at my last Dr appointment my Dr told me that I was already 3cm and "very soft and thin". Last night I lost my plug and am now starting to panic about the fact that I am SO not in control of anything anymore. I am kind of a control freak and I don't like not knowing when things are going to happen. My DH has been very supportive and reassuring that we are ready, but I still don't like not being in control. Anyone else have these feelings?

Re: Getting nervous...

  • I think it's very common to have those feelings.  I'm also very Type A and I'm already getting nervous about when I'm going to go into labor, how quickly we can get my mom to our house to watch DD1 so we can head to the hospital, what if the weather is bad, etc, etc...

The thing I've learned is to do what you can to prepare for stuff and you just have to make peace with not having control over when and how things are going to happen.  In other words, take care of what you *can* control and that kind of helps a little bit with feeling prepared for when the time comes.  So, if there's anything left to do on your to-do list, take care of it and hopefully that'll help you to feel more "ready."

  • Right now I'm somewhat comforted by the fact that I'm not in control.  I like knowing that my body will do what it needs to do, and that I can sort of stay out of it :)

I'm usually a control freak too, but in this case, I'm trying to trust mother nature. I'm finding it helpful to be doing things that I know I can do to control the situation: like getting the nursery completely ready, pack my hospital bag, read up on labor and delivery.   I just figure, women's bodies are made for this! We've been doing it for thousands of years.

Disclaimer: I'm sure my chilled mentality will flip 180 degrees when I start going into labor, lol.

  • I am just trying to avoid thinking about it :)  I had to stop watching shows like A Baby Story b/c it was making me anxious.  I just try to remember that L&D is such a short amount of time versus everything else!

  • At least you're getting a build-up! I was due the 26th with my 1st son, and went in on the 7th for a gestational diabetes ultrasound to see how he was sizing, and he was in the 3rd%... I was told "you aren't going home! We're inducing you right now."

I didn't have a bag with me...the car seat...anything. I had to send DH back home to go get everything!

I'm actually really looking forward to the slow build-up...I felt kind of gypped last time!

  • I have managed not to think about it much, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to hold out once the signs start to show. My therapist said it was a good coping stradegy that I just choose not to think about it since I know there's nothing I can do about it and it's going to happen no matter what. It's very unlike me to not worry about stuff so I'm hoping I can keep this up.
