3rd Trimester

Second, third, fourth... time moms. Labor & delivery question.

I know this has been posted before, but I can't seem to find the thread, so I'll just ask again...

This is my third pregnancy, with my other two children being born at exactly 37 weeks.  Apparently I didn't hit that mark, so now I'm getting pretty antsy!

So my question is, for second, third, fourth, etc. time moms:
1) What was the birth date vs. due date for your births?
2) Did the labor delivery get successively easier, show no pattern or, God forbid, get worse?

Any input is appreciated!!!

Re: Second, third, fourth... time moms. Labor & delivery question.

  • My first two were at 38w, so I am trying to prepare myself for going later this time. I can't imagine another 4 weeks! I actually know quite a few moms who were pregnant the longest with #3. My deliveries were pretty much the same, but they were both easy. 3 hours of active labor, and 2 pushes for DD, one for DS.

  • My first was 37w, my 2nd was 39w. The labor was shorter with my son, and in some ways easier because I didn't have pitocin, and I had more freedom to move around.

I mentioned to my OB that I'm due for a late baby, and she said they typically follow a pattern, soooo, you (and I) may go early again. :)

  • 1) What was the birth date vs. due date for your births? #1 induced 3 days past-due, #2 came 1 week early on her own (39 weeks)
    2) Did the labor delivery get successively easier, show no pattern or, God forbid, get worse? #1 induction - 8 hours of labor+20 minutes of pushing, #2 12 hours of labor + 2 minutes of pushing (baby #2 was harder b/c I labored longer and overnight)

  • I had DD at 37 wks 3 days. My labor with her was back labor, and it lasted 17 hours from start to finish. It was pure hell. I had DS at 39 wks 4 days via induction, and my labor with him was 5 hours from start to finish. I had DS pain med free, and my labor with him was much easier than it was with DD.

  • "lildevil968", why were you induced with DS, if you don't mind me asking?

  • This is my 3rd as well.

#1 was 8 days late. 30 hour labor, pushed for 1 hour.

#2 was born on her EDD. 8 hour labor, pushed twice. Honestly, her labor was MUCH shorter, but MUCH more painful (both natural).

  • 1st birth:  @31 wks (after he was born it was determined he was actually a late 32 wker) Normal 1st time birth story.

2nd Birth: @33 wks I was on pills and bed rest but my labor progressed and I went to hospital and I was put on Mag and had had her shortly after 34 wks.  I was exhausted due to the mag and this labor was horrible because I couldn't push because I was too weak.  They had to use the vacuum.

3rd Birth @ 33 weeks PROM and PTL.  Easiest birth ever!!  Water broke at 3 pm he was born at 9:47 after 3 pushes!  The contractions were mild.

4th Birth @ 37 wks 6 days.  I had 17P shots until 36 wks and I had her shortly after my last shot.  Birth was very fast.  I had contractions all day but wasn't sure if it was BH or real.  Then around 7pm I thought yea probably real thing.  By 10:30pm they were to the point I could talk through.  We headed to hospital and they jumped from 10 mins apart to 4 mins and bad.  I got to hospital and was only a cranky woman every 4 mins lol  I was 8 cm and by 11 they told me I could push but the midwife had said that this baby was going to be a lot bigger than my preemies and I freaked out and refused to push.  I think I ended up pushing for an hour with her and she was only 1lb bigger than my largest preemie.

5th pregnancy:  I had 17P shots and bedrest until 36 weeks and I am 38 wks 3 days and still very pregnant and no sign of real labor.  I have had several false labors already.  That is a new one.  this pregnancy has been so very different.

I rate my birth's in this order from best to worst:  3, 4, 1, 2.

    Good luck.  :(

  • I can't really tell when this one is coming. I had to be induced at 38 weeks with #1 due to PIH.

I had it again with #2 but it wasn't as bad. I made it to 39w6d before I was induced and I came in with contractions 7 min apart and didn't even know it.

I have a feeling this one will be at least to my due date

  • DS1 was 3 days late.  DS2 was one day early.

DS1 labour 9 hours start to finish.  DS2 labour 2.5 hours start to finish.

Afterpains more uncomfortable with DS2, nothing tylenol didn't take the edge off of.

promised myself I'd retire when I turned gold, and yet here I am
  • #1- My water broke at 35w6d (pPROM) and he was born the next day at 36 weeks exactly. My labor was about 13 hours from water breaking to delivery, but only 4 hours from pitocin to delivery (had to augment since I wasn't contracting). Less than 30 minutes of pushing--natural birth.

#2- Was induced at 37w1d because of IUGR (I had also been on bed rest and meds for PTL since 30 weeks). Total labor time from pitocin to delivery was just under 10 hours. Less than 10 minutes of pushing--natural birth.

My labors were very similar since I ended up with pitcocin both times, but it was much easier on me the second time around. With my first I had an episiotomy and my second I didn't and didn't tear, so the recovery was much better. The only thing that was worse for me was the postpartum cramping, it was so terrible the second time. I'm really dreading that again. I've been having PTL issues since 17 weeks with this one and I've been taking the 17p injections this time around. We're just hoping to make it to 36 weeks right now, so I have no idea when this baby will come!

  •  My first DS was exactly 7 days over due. With his labor it was super easy, my water broke at 3am and I had my epi done with in an hour (I only had one strong contraction...my mom worked for this hospital and warned them I'm a wimp). He was born at 3:10pm that day. Because I really didn't experience labor the next time was shockingly different.

With my second DS I was over due by 4 days. I had contractions but nothing big until my hip pain was terrible and we went into L&D at the hospital (we delivered at a different hospital..so no drugs until 5cm) and they had me admit and walk until we were at a 5. I arrived at 9pm and he was delivered at 5:45am. I did have an epi with him also. But he was a big baby and labor was painful.

With my DD was a different story...She turned breech 2 days before she was due, and when she did her cord tangled around her neck. I went for a check up the 2 days before my due date and they couldn't find her heart beat with a doppler. With u/s they found it and determined I would be induced the next morning at 9am. We started the induction at 9am and hoped she would turn naturally, but it was not the case.  I had an external inversion done twice and with the 2nd attempt they held her in position and up'd my pit drip.  I labored until 10pm and then my OB decided to do a c-section. As they were prepping we tried to push one last time, and she came out. She was stunned but healthy and had no problems after.

Now that we are having twins this time I'm hoping to reach my due date, and so far everything is pointing to it.  My struggle is deciding if I should just do a c-section or try for a regular delivery.  My DH is new to his job and doesn't have access to paternity leave and could only help for a week and maybe a half. (super bummed). But who knows what will happen...

  • Both my first and second came at exactly 41 weeks. This is my third as well and I'm following the same pattern as last time with absolutely no dilation only 4 days before my due date so I'm fully expecting to go a full week overdue again.

As for labour .. my first was about 17hrs long and two hours of that was pushing. I had a 2nd degree tear and recovery was painful but no more than expected or normal I assume. My second was VERY fast .. 1hr18mins so no time for an epi which was not in the plan. Pushed for three mins and didn't tear at all but was stretched pretty thin so they gave me a few stitches. Recovery was a breeze. Hoping for a little longer labour this time, an epi and an easy recovery :)

  • Baby #1- I had a week long DD and he came three days after that entire week came and went, 9 hour labor, very typical w/out complications.

Baby #2- Premature birth, DS arrived at 36 wks., very fast labor only three hours and two pushes.

Baby #3- Induced at 38 wks., was already dilated to 5 when I came in for schuduled delivery, four hour labor, only problem was that epidural only took on one side of my body, still a great delivery.

I have noticed that yes, my deliveries are quick but once the water is broken by the doctor they might as well stay put because baby almost rushes out after that!

  • This will be #3 for me and I'm hoping it happens on time! #1 was 8 days late. Went in for induction and was 6 cm dialayed. Didn't know I was having back labor all night. Broke my water at around 12pm she was born at 7:20 pm after about 20 minutes of pushing no drugs. Lots of rocking and sleeping in between contractions.

#2 was 4 days late and induced with pitocin and took longer and was way more painful. Epidural and about 6 pushes she was out at 5:30am

  • DD#1 - born on her due date.  Water broke at 2am, had her at 9:30am. 3 contractions worth of pushing and she was born.

DS - had to be induced at 41 weeks.  Labored for 9 hours, 3 contractions worth of pushing and he was born.

DD#2 - had to be induced at 41 weeks.  Labored 8 hours, 1 push and her head was out.

Hoping this baby is easy too!

  • 1) with my first son I was 13 days after edd, second son I was 2 weeks early, with my 3rd son I was 22 days early, I'm thinking as a gut feeling this baby will be early.

    2) my labors all were quick but let me tell you pain wise I thought they felt worse maybe because they were quick and each baby seem to get bigger. But with my 3rd son I had a lot of complications that I didn't have before so that could of played into it.

but each labor is very different. Each of my labors were very different. Knock on wood the longest I've labored is 7 hours and I hope it stays that way.

This is my 2nd child. with DD my orig. due date was March 19th, 08, they moved it to March 29th. Then she was Born 5 days earlier than the original, March 14th. I was 38 weeks exactly when she came.

This time around, we will have to wait and see. My orig. due date for DS is Feb. 19th, 2012, they moved me to the 24th. I'm tryin not to get my hopes up but I figure he will get here right before Valentines Day. I'm alrady starting to have more discomfort than expected and I'm just 30 weeks and 2 days as of today.
