How to find out about warrants and tickets??

My mom has a history of being um, less than truthful. She found out last week her license is suspended (pulled over for a brake light out, she says), and I'm not sure she's telling me us the whole story as to why it's suspended. I told her to call Travis Co, Wilco, City of Austin, and City of RR to ask about anything else she might be unaware of but she hasn't done it yet. We've gotten several notices for her here at our house, which I have passed along to her, so there is the potential for several issues in different jurisdictions. I would assume if there actually was a warrant out she would have been arrested, but since at least one notice was for a pending warrant I just want to be sure.... It's all for stupid sh*t like not paying tickets, which makes it even worse IMP because she could have just frickin' taken care of it!

I have her full name and DOB, and might have her SSN and/or TXDL # somewhere. Is there a website that I can search to find active warrants and stuff? I don't mind paying a little, I'm sure the fee and paying to take care of it would be less than bailing her out of jail. :-/

ETA: I have her SSN, but haven't been able to find her TXDL.

Re: How to find out about warrants and tickets??

  • yes, you can.  I was able to find DH's warrant on the county website (his was in travis county).  I don't remember the address- I just googled.  I think most counties and cities have this capability- but you would have to go to each one. It is atleast free. good luck

  • When DH got a speeding ticket out of state, they sent info to the TX DPS in case he did not pay up and his license needed to be revoked. I want to say that the DPS website has a place where you can check on the standing of your DL (DH said he checked it after we sent a copy of the receipt for payment). Good luck!

  • If you think they are traffic warrants (for unpaid tickets), those are Class C misdemeanor warrants, and are therefore not entered into the statewide wanted persons database, and thus wouldn't be reported to any paid background-finding websites.  As pp's said, you or she would have to contact each law enforcement agency where she has a possibility of having an unpaid ticket.  Some agencies may have the info accessible on their website, some may require you to call.

If you call the Municipal or JP court (instead of the police dept/sherriff's office)  for those agencies, you are more likely to get someone who would be willing to accept payment in lieu of serving the warrant.  The cops aren't going totake the payment - they're just going to serve the warrant.  The court is who is really wanting the money so (at least where I work) they will be more likely to work with her and then recall the warrant once the fine is paid.

As for her suspended license, it sounds like if she has that many traffic ticket issues, it was probably suspended because she got so many tickets.  Other (most popular) reasons for suspension includes a DWI/BWI arrest, or convictions for No Insurance.  In any case, the licensee is ALWAYS notified in writing by DPS of their license suspension.  If she has moved or for some reason no longer receives mail at the address on her DL would be about the only way she might not have received notice of suspension.

Regardless, be sure she knows that while suspended, SHE CANNOT DRIVE.  At all.  She could possibly go to jail immediately if caught driving (if suspension was for DWI or No Insurance).  Or, at the very least, she'd get another ticket and have her vehicle impounded because even after ticketing her, an officer cannot let her drive away on a suspended license. (Some officers might be nice and allow her to call someone to pick her up but either way - she can't drive).

  • In Travis, you can look up warrants easily: https://public.co.travis.tx.us/wow/default.aspx

The Georgetown city web site will also allow you to look up tickets. I don't have that link.

Also, check www.txsurchargeonline.com to see if she has outstanding surcharges. Some tickets result in a surcharge and if you don't pay them, your license is invalidated. You will need her license number for that one, though.

ETA: You can also run a report on the DPS web site to see what tickets someone has received, but I believe you need the license for that (license number and really long "pin" number on it).

We have so much time, and so little to do! Strike that, reverse it.

  • A good DL clearing house for what you need to clear up your suspended license is

    www.texas.gov/driver

click on "check driving eligibility and pay reinstatement fees"  It will get you started on what needs to happen.  Also depends on who issued tickets as to which court... i.e. if APD issued then it is Austin municipal court if DPS issued it is Travis County JP court.

And pp is right... no driving on suspended license it will be a giant cluster and cost thousands in surcharges.

  • Thank you all! I was able to get info for everything except RR and DPS (because I don't have her DL#). To search criminal history at DPS, you have to purchase credits, which is what I meant by not minding paying I didn't know if any of the other places worked the same way. I don't really trust the 3rd party pay sites.

She has a conviction for not having insurance last summer, and she missed a payment in October which is what I think it's for. She does have insurance now, though. I know she hasn't updated the address on her license, and although it didn't turn up in my search she says she has a ticket for that as well.... We've gotten a handful of things for her, but nothing about a suspended license. She's moved a lot in the past 2 years which certainly doesn't help.

She did actually have her car impounded last week, and while she has it back now she has not been driving at all. I know for a fact, because I've been toting her @ss all over town. Angry
