I received notice on Wed, just before closing, that I am being let go in an effort to cut costs. I will have to work thru the end of the year in order for it to be considered a layoff. My boss wants me to make a list of everything that I do including file paths where documents are stored so that they can figure out who will be stuck with my duties. He keeps making little comments in the form of questions as to who should do specific tasks. I keep telling him that it is not up to me. I am doing my absolute best to be professional and helpful but I really just want to scream and tell him that I don't give a flying hoot.
Yesterday he had the nerve to ask me if I will still be coming to the office x-mas party (I plan all of our company events). I told him NO but that I would still plan it at the same standards that I would have before. He then said that he didn't feel like it was a good time to celebrate so the party should be canceled.
Today, while discussing my list of duties, he said, "Well, you don't want us calling you every day, do you?" I told him that I'm changing my #. He said that's not the right attitude. I told him that's the best attitude I have for today. I am here and will do what you ask but after 2 weeks, I am done. He then mentioned that the company would be moving and asked me (very sarcastically) if I was going to come back to help with the move. I told him, "When I have to move out of my apartment because I can't afford it anymore are you guys going to come help me move my kids and I to a lower income area!?" He basically turned around and walked away.
I am so glad he is going back to the corporate office today because I would definitely end up kicking his twiggy a$$ before the next 2 weeks is up. Please give me the patience and strength to make it thru the day....and the next 2 weeks...
Re: Laid off - Who the fvck does that?!?! (obvious vent)
That totally blows! I'm sorry you're having a hard time. Boo
I'm really sorry they did that to you, and this time of year, too (though there's never really a good time for that).
Praying for you that you have the strength to get through the next 2 weeks without beating the $hit out of him. Because I would want to, too.
I am sorry you are having to deal with this. I am in the same boat as you. I was notified that after nine years with my company I will also be laid off at the end of the year. It really sucks this time of year.
I am also passing off/training folks. I was also asked yesterday to help put scope together for a very large project which will be starting its second phase next year. I am not part of that project anymore, but I still have to be professional and put together the scope, budget and contract. Really sucks.
Wow! I think you are taking it much better than I would be.
That really sucks.
I would advise my boss that should they need my help after Dec 31 that I would be available as a consultant, at double the hourly rate you're making now.

this. your boss doesn't work for free and neither should you. i'm so sorry.
I am sorry for you situation as well. It blows my mind that they can be so heartless and then ask for big sh*t to get done. I have been with this company for 6 years and have taken on the responsibility of 3 other people (including the director of ops and the the VP) at no additional pay. I am the lowest paid person in the entire company and they cut me to save money! What the what?!?!
They have also asked me to start and finish a pretty big task that has been overlooked for 2+ years now and I haven't decided yet if I am going to do it. I have a bad attitude today (which is so not me) and the people that I work with daily can tell that I need to be left alone and are doing so. My "boss" works in the corporate office and I've only met him a handful of times. He must be dense because he keeps coming by my desk. Ugh!!
ugh, I'm sorry. I hope things look up with the New Year.
All of this. Frickin' sucks, the asssholes.
Your boss is a giant DB! I hope you go to work and relax for the next two weeks. Don't take any crap from the boss and cetainly don't ever answer if they call you after the new year.
Years ago we had a tech working with us and the head honchos just walked in one day and fired her due to downsizing. It was so heart breaking. She did not want to come back and visit even with her friends because it was just wrong and painful what they did and how they handled it.
That really sucks. DH was laid off when I was 7 months pregnant but at least they let him go the day they told him with a severance package. I couldn't imagine having to train people to do my job knowing I was laid off. His d-bag boss did try to get him to sign a 2 year no compete for an extra $2k (had the check written out to him and everything). He turned him down but everyone else signed it. They did buy his blackberry off of him on the spot for an extra $1k because they were worried about his contact list. We back everything up on our home computer, suckers!
We lived in DFW at the time and it only took DH 30 days to get another job in Plano. The job market isn't so bad there. And we moved recently because a competitor of his old company scoped him up for a nice pay increase. It ended up being a good thing for our family.
Uhhh, typically a lay off (in my experience) means that day of notice is your last day. I can't believe they are having you stay for so long. I'd be asking your immediate supervisor for a written recommendation letter on company letterhead also. That is what I did when I got laid off.
I can't believe they asked if you were going to help them move? They suck big harry donkey balls.

With a minimum of 3 hours per consult, even if each consult doesn't take that long.

This. He is being a jerk.
Wow they're pushing their boundaries! I got laid off on the 1st due to "down sizing". Ummm...if you JUST opened up a new facility and you're letting go of the facility coordinator/receptionist, doesn't that mean you're closing the office?? I hated how secretive my last company was being. Good luck with not stabbing anyone there
DH got laid off just before Christmas a few years ago (pre-DS thank goodness!). His company had to friggin' order his final check TWO WEEKS in advance from corporate, and they knew he was commuting an hour each way. They still waited until he came in on a Saturday morning to tell him the previous day was his last day.
We'd just bought a house, hadn't been married all that long and it was STRESSFUL to say the least. Those DBs didn't even give him severance at all. It was awful.
In the end, he had 3 new offers in about 3wks, and the new job turned out to be a HUGE improvement. At least in our case, it was for the best in the end, but it didn't make it any less crappy while we were dealing with it. Hope you have similar luck! My heart goes out to you.

Brilliant comeback. Definitely shut him up didn't it? LOL
I am sorry about your situation. I can understand how you feel. After my mat leave in 2008, i returned to work to hear rumours of layoffs and downsizing. i made it to 4 months before i got laid off... The very first one in the office to get laid off. it was my job for almost 6 yrs and i was damn good at it! I was the only CSR in the (small) office, i questioned why they let me go at all, why was I the first to go, and why would they let me come back to work after a mat leave, only to be laid off after 4 months. I can only guess that they allowed me to come back to bank hours to become re-eligible for Unemployment benefits. I also questioned why all the employees were told during a staff meeting the week prior that 'no one was getting let go' and all of our jobs are safe, yet the next week i was let go. They let us all attend our Christmas party and luncheon and take vacation, then we all came back from vacay and started laying people off. Very awkward.
My boss seemed so cold, impersonal and unemotional when he let me go, lt was very awkward. My chair hadn't even cooled yet when the IT guy came to delete my profile and change all the passwords, i felt so weird and humiliated about it all that i didn't even pack up my desk, i let someone else do it for me. I tried my darnedest to remain composed and professional that day and for the months ahead because my friend's grandfather owns the company and a lot of her family works there. I didn't want to SH** talk anyone. They did write a great recommendation letter and a gave me a decent settlement. I understand that that was a hard time for everyone because of the recession.
OP, i wish you the best of luck for 2012 and in finding a new job. Good luck getting thru the next 2 wks.
