prenatal vitamin help?

With each passing day DH gets closer and closer to "pulling the trigger" on our TTC plans.  As of right now, he's talking April... but last night (wink wink) he was thinking maybe sooner.  We also have been not as careful about the charting as we once were...

I ordered a prenatal last week (from a recc on this board) on a hunch DH wants to start sooner.  It's Pure Encapsulations Pre Natal Nutrients.

I opened up the bottle and gagged at the smell.  I am the worlds worst vitamin taker - so I knew they would smell... but sheesh.  I got it down with a giant gulp of coke, but the taste is still there in my mouth.  Have you found something that gets these down any easier?  I have to get through this bottle ($$) before trying a different brand.

Re: prenatal vitamin help?

  • That's why I take the Target brand. They don't have a funky smell or taste to them. Try taking them with milk, maybe the thickness of the milk will absorb some of the funk.

  • I took/take the Target Prenatals and then I added in a DHA supplement when I found out I was pregnant. No problems with them at all and they are not pricey.
  • Really?? That's so funny bc that's what I take and I don't smell them at all. I think I'm really sensitive to that, too. Maybe you'll get used to it? They're really good vitamins without all the additives, glue, etc. Would a different time of day/full/empty stomach possibly help? Or just hold your nose? ha!

How exciting that y'all will be taking the leap soon!! Good luck!

  • That's rough!

I am really bad at taking vitamins, so I have ended up with the gummy prenatals. I buy them from Target and I take them every day because they're like candy. If you end up not liking the ones you have, you could try those next :)

Oh my goodness. I opened it up, and had to put it on the counter and walk away.  It was strong!

Well, I'll keep my fingers crossed I become immune to the smell, because I bought a bottle of 120 of them, and they aren't cheap!

pp's suggestion of milk may be my next attempt!  Thanks!

  • Yeah, they are NOT cheap. Hope it gets better for you!

  • All of the OTC ones made me sick. I'm actually taking a prescription one. They're coated and smell like vanilla. They're not cheap but we are very blessed that DH's company covers prescription costs.

  • I take prescription prenatals and I've never noticed a smell.  Plus, through the HEB Prescription RX program you get 12 months of prenatal vitamins for free.  I think it's like $5 to sign up, but I also know they run specials where they waive that fee.

  • I can't swallow those.  It makes me want to throw up.  The only thing that somewhat made it manageable was a whole glass of milk with it.
