Breastfeeding

xp: c-section, heavy bleeding/uterine atony, birth day 1

My sis had her scheduled c-section today.  After an hour in recovery my BIL sent an email that she was rushed back into surgery because  her uterus was not contracting.  she was finally back in the room several hours later, but on heavy meds and can't breast feed until tomorrow.  BIL fed the baby with a syringe.

it all sounds so scary, and I have no idea how much she has even got to see her baby.  did any of you have this?  what was your experience?   I feel like bonding after birth is so important, but they were saving her life and I'm sure they an make it up.

Re: xp: c-section, heavy bleeding/uterine atony, birth day 1

  • I hemorrhage after my csection this time. It happened about 10 hours afterwards (middle of the night!). I also had to go back for surgery under general anesthesia, but they let me breastfeed right afterwards. Your sister may want to check with a lactation consultant to see if she could nurse sooner if she's up for it.

Also she should be pumping even if she can't nurse!

As for the bonding, it will still happen!  With DS, I had a csection and reacted to the spinal and vomited almost nonstop for almost 24 hours. I did nurse, but I would immediately hand him to someone else because I was so sick, so I didn't feel like we bonded that first day. We went on to breastfeed for 19 months and we are definitely bonded now.

Also, if your sister lost a lot of blood, she's going to be exhausted for a long time!  Make sure she has lots of help the first few weeks.

  • Yikes! Is she okay now?

I had a c-section with my first son, and my uterus took longer than expected to contract back down, so I ended up being in surgery for awhile and was given more drugs than usual. I was also put on antibiotics after surgery for a fever, and my son was taken to the NICU for a few days and put on antibiotics himself. We were separated for the first three days of his life (in the same hospital, but different parts).

I started pumping within a few hours of his birth, and pumped every 2-3 hours around the clock. I had him latch on whenever we were together, but it was probably only a few times those first few days. My DH fed him with a syringe the first night or two, but then the LC at the hospital had him switch to "finger feeding", where you attach a supplemental nursing system to your finger and feed breastmilk through that. We finally starting getting latching right when he was 5+ days old, but I know I pumped the whole time he was hospitalized (it was for a week total), and then he was exclusively breastfed.

It wasn't an easy start, but he went on to nurse for 2+ years. Is there a LC who they can hire or is working at the hospital? Finding someone, and pumping and getting the baby nursing are the biggest things, I think. And having her DH do skin-to-skin with the baby if she's too tired is a good idea, too. Hope it works out for her, and she has a fast recovery!

  • Thank you for your input.  It sounds like she is doing better today-- they've tried nursing a few times, but BIL said he wasn't sure how much the baby got.  I think the most important thing is getting him latched and sucking and actual feeding will come later.  I don't think she is pumping at all, but I don't know.

To add to the complexity, they are in Belgium, so things are a bit different over there.  It is hard to call and give support, and I don't know if she has an LC or who is working with her-.  And it also adds to my anxiety and helplessness!
