Toddlers: 12 - 24 Months

How long does it take your LO to fall asleep at night?

From the time you set him in his crib/start rocking/etc?

DS is starting to take forever! I'm wondering if I should push his bedtime back a bit, but then I think maybe he is going to use that time to "wind down" regardless, so I'd rather set him down earlier. He alternates between occasionally whining and singing his ABCs or other songs, lol. On average, I would say for about 40m (we did push his bedtime back about 15 minutes).

  • Some nights it's 5 minutes, some nights it's 45.

  • Our DS takes about 10-20 minutes to fall asleep, depending on how tired he is. I usually rock him for a bit, then put him in his crib. If he's really tired, he'll just roll over on his tummy and go completely to sleep. If he's a little more awake, he may sit up and cry when I leave the room. But that only lasts for a few seconds usually, then he lays down.

He goes to bed between 7:45 and 8.

  • 20 minutes, sometimes more and sometimes less. He just rolls around a lot and talks to his teddy bear until he falls asleep.
    "To me, you are perfect."

  • I start feeding Oliver a bottle around 7:45.  After that I rock him and sing to him for about 5 minutes until he's settled, but not sleeping.  Then I lay him in his crib.  He's usually sleeping in 10 minutes or less.

This.  Last night DD sang, "Ho ho ho, A C C (her version of A B C)" for like, 30 minutes to her stuffed animals.  Then she proceeded to ask each of them if they had a 'caca'.  "Bear bear has caca? No? Okay, dodo!"  "Birdy has caca? No? Okay, dodo!"

DH and I were in tears we were laughing so hard.

Other nights she just passes out the minute her head hits the mattress.

  • Most nights she rolls over and falls asleep, but every now and then she takes 30 minutes and you can hear her talking to her stuffed cat or counting.

  • It is never the same.  As a pp said, some nights 5 minutes, other nights 30-40.  I haev noticed lately though that the days he goes to daycare he is out that night super fast.  They are so active during the day that he is worn out come bed time.

  • 2.0 seconds, but this is from the kid who only slept in my arms until she was 5 months, and would take up to 2 hrs to fall asleep after that. She's been good about falling asleep for naps and at night for the past 4 months.

  • It varies - could be 5 minutes, could be over an hour. I've started enlisting H when it's more than 1/2hr. He comes in, she gets pissed. I leave for 15 minutes. She is pissed the whole time. I come back, she falls asleep pretty quickly.

  • Our kid is wonderful/weird. He can be wound up like he's had a coffee IV, you show him his bottle and it's instantly time for bed. We take maybe 10min to change him while he's having his bottle, we brush his teeth, and he wants to go straight into his crib. Sometimes he will babble or play with his gloworm or stuffed toys a bit, but he's usually out in 15-20min.

Getting his nails clipped is a whole nuther set of shenanigans though....

  • Since he went to one nap a day our bedtime routine is bath, jammies, nurse for about 10 minutes, into the crib and he's usually asleep within 5 minutes.  If he's not tired he'll have a good cry and sometimes I have to go in and rock him for a few but for the most part he's right out.

This. We are very fortunate. T turns out the light, I plop her in the crib, she is normally out before the seahorse turns off.

  • Ummm 5 seconds...........don't hate!  Both of my kids actually tell us when they are ready for bed (always around the same time) and go right to sleep. Of course if they are sick this will change, but 95% of the time we lay them down and don't hear a peep..........................ALL NIGHT LONG!
