I saw someone posted about this recently, but I didn't read the post and now can't find it. I'm an elem. teacher and received an email that a student in the school has fifth disease. I was told to call my OB and make sure I tell them I might have been exposed. So I called my office today and the secretary just said to wash my hands and stay away from the kid.
The email from the school nurse mentioned a blood test that might be needed and this secretary isn't the brightest, so I'm wondering if there's anything more I should be following up with. Maybe I'll call back a different time and try to get someone else on the phone? I'm not super worried because I don't teach his grade, but I still thought I would follow up.
Anyone know about this? Should I just follow her advice and leave it at that?
Re: Fifth Disease
Here is the thread you were looking for:

If I remember correctly, the conclusion from the previous thread was that Fifth disease was to be taken very seriously during pregnancy. I believe the woman who was exposed had to do a blood test that day, and another again in 2 weeks.
Even if you don't teach the student's grade, I'd still be worried (we all know how kids are about spreading germs). I'd follow up again with a different doctor or nurse.
Good luck!
THIS! I would be pissed if the secretary gave me medical advice, def not their job duties and why there are OB nurses and dr's.
Good luck, hope you haven't been infected, and that you get some answers quick!

HI! Im the one who posted it. I was exposed and was in direct contact with a girl who has it.
The girl's ped told the parents to inform any pregnant woman who may have been in contact with her. So then I called my OB and they wanted to do a blood test right away as they take it very seriously. So they drew my blood and will do the same two weeks from now. They all said it's not to be joked around with as it can have very dangerous effects on the baby. It can cause anemia and water buildup and that is very dangerous!
I would definitely ask for the blood test to see if you are immune. If you are you are good to go. But I wouldn't just leave it at that.
So glad I called - The office was closed for the weekend, so I left a message with the answering service since I knew it would go right to the doctor and didn't want to worry about it all weekend. My doctor said I probably have an immunity to it and that it's not as big a deal later in pregnancy, but they want to see me Monday to do a blood test anyway. I don't want to get anyone in trouble, but I do plan to mention what I was told by the secretary.
Thanks ladies for your help!
Absolutely, she needs to be educated better. I'm so glad you called and hope everything turns out OK
